Audiobook and reading-app ghosts: kill the $8.99–$28.99 renewal and spend the credits first

A 13-month audit for finding forgotten Audible, Kindle Unlimited, Everand and Blinkist charges, working out which company actually bills you, spending the credits and unlocks that die with the account, and cancelling on the rail that owns the charge.

Audible's Standard membership now costs $8.99 a month, and its Premium tier $14.95 a month. 1 The Standard plan is the newest arrival: Audible added it as a lower-priced entry tier across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany and France, and kept Premium at $14.95. 2 Paying a year up front on Premium costs $149.50 for twelve credits, or $229.50 for twenty-four. 1
Kindle Unlimited runs $11.99 a month plus tax in the United States. 3 Everand sells three plans at $11.99, $16.99 and $28.99 a month, for one, three and five book unlocks. 4 Blinkist's twelve-month Premium plan opens at $79.99 against a $99.99 renewal price, and its twelve-month Pro plan at $139.99 against $174.99. 5
Those four subscriptions sit in the same monthly band as a phone bill, and the habit they pay for ends long before the billing does. CNET's 2026 State of Subscriptions survey, run by YouGov across 2,522 US adults between April 29 and May 1, 2026, put average subscription spending at $111 a month, or $1,332 a year, with $21 a month — $252 a year — going to subscriptions people do not use. The wasted figure was $17 a month in 2025. 6
C+R Research measured the same blind spot from underneath in a survey of 1,000 US consumers fielded between April 22 and May 2, 2022: respondents estimated $86 a month from memory, then itemised $219. Nearly three-quarters, 74%, said recurring subscription charges were easy to forget, and 42% said they had stopped using a service while still paying for it. 7

Why a reading subscription outlives the reading habit

The trial continues by itself. Amazon states it plainly: "At the end of your free trial, you're automatically converted to a monthly paid subscription plan." 8 Audible's version is a 30-day free membership: "If you enjoy your Audible trial, do nothing and your membership will automatically continue. We'll send you an email reminder before your trial ends." 1 Everand gives web sign-ups 30 days and app-store sign-ups 7, and its trial "renews automatically into a paid subscription unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends." 9
The term has no end date. Blinkist: "Yes, our subscriptions are set to automatically renew at the end of each billing period." 10 Google Play describes its subscriptions as being "for an indefinite term," charged at the start of each cycle "unless you unsubscribe." 11
The balance sits inside the account. Audible Premium credits expire 12 months after issue "or when membership is cancelled," and title selections made on the Standard plan are locked when the membership ends. 1 Everand: unused unlocks expire with the subscription, and unlocked books are locked afterwards. 12 Kindle Unlimited: once the billing date passes, "you lose access to content that you have checked out." 13 A cancellation date is also an expiry date for books the reader has already paid for.
The seller on the statement may not be the app you open. Everand's own plan page says the merchant of record is Scribd, Inc., the company behind Everand, so a card statement can carry "Scribd, Inc." for a service the reader knows by another name. 4 Amazon publishes the descriptors its own charges use, and its digital-services line is "Amazon Digital Svcs amzn.com/bill," which the same page ties to Kindle books and to Kindle Unlimited's monthly charge. 14
The first year and the next year are two different prices. Blinkist's checkout states that $139.99 "is processed as an intro offer, then $174.99 will be billed every 12 months automatically." 5

Find the charge before you cancel anything

Search 13 months of every bank and credit-card statement, plus PayPal. Thirteen months, not three: an annual plan appears once in a year and vanishes from a 90-day view. Audible's annual Premium membership is exactly that shape — one $149.50 charge that shows up on no other month's statement. 1

Amazon's own descriptor table is the reference for the Amazon-family lines: "Amazon Digital Svcs amzn.com/bill" for digital services, "AMZN.COM/BILL" and "AMZN Mktp US" for marketplace purchases, and "AMZ*Prime Shipping Club amzn.com/bill" for Prime. 14 For Everand, expect the Scribd name. 4
Search the inbox in the same sitting, because the receipt names the account that owns the membership:

The receipt-owner test. Match five fields before you cancel: the statement descriptor, the receipt email, the storefront account, the card's last four digits, and the next billing date. Everand's help centre describes the failure this test prevents — a reader cancels on the Everand website, keeps getting charged, and the charge turns out to be coming from Apple or Google rather than from Everand at all. 12 Apple's own guidance works the same way from the other end: search your email for a receipt from Apple, and when no receipt exists, the company billing you is the one named on your bank or card statement. 15

Spend the balance, then cancel, vendor by vendor

Audible

Price. Standard $8.99 a month, Premium $14.95 a month, or $149.50 and $229.50 a year for twelve and twenty-four credits. 1
Path. Sign in on the Audible website, select Account details, select the Cancel membership link, then confirm. 16
The trap is the credits. Audible states that at the end of the final billing cycle, Premium members "lose access to all unused credits and member benefits," and that credits "expire 12 months after their issue date, or upon cancellation." 16 Titles already bought with a credit or a card stay in your library; anything from the included catalogue, and any title selected as a Standard member, gets a lock icon. 1 One exception is worth knowing before you choose a rail: credits received through an App Store or Google Play membership carry no expiry and stay in the account after cancellation. 16
Pause. Audible offers a pause that keeps existing credits alive until their original expiration dates; annual plans are not eligible. 16
Cost of leaving. The pricing page states there are "no commitments and no cancellation fees," and cancelling before the trial ends avoids the first charge. 1
I am cancelling my Audible membership on the account registered to [email]. Before you complete it, tell me how many credits I hold, the date each one expires, whether my plan can be paused instead, and confirm that the audiobooks I bought with credits stay in my library.

Kindle Unlimited

Price. $11.99 a month plus tax. 3
Path. Go to the Kindle Unlimited cancellation page, sign in to your Amazon account, and select Cancel membership. 13
Traps. The membership stays active to the next billing date, and after that you lose access to everything checked out. 13 The same screen offers a one-month pause as the alternative, and Amazon warns that a paused subscription "resumes automatically," 13 which makes a pause a delay rather than a decision. Pausing is unavailable during a free trial or a promotional period, so the trial month is the worst month to look for that exit. 13 A prepaid membership bought as a gift or a bundle returns no partial refund for unused months. 13 Kindle Unlimited is also a separate membership from Prime, and it is not included with it. 3
Please confirm the cancellation of my Kindle Unlimited membership on the Amazon account registered to [email], give me the exact date the membership ends, and list the titles I currently have checked out so I can return them.

Everand, and the separate Scribd rail

Price. Standard $11.99, Plus $16.99, Deluxe $28.99 a month, for one, three and five unlocks. 4
Path. Sign in on the Everand website, click your profile icon, select Your account, select Cancel next to Cancel subscription in the Subscription section, then Cancel subscription again on the page that opens and follow the prompts. An email confirms it. 12
Trap one: two subscriptions behind one logo. Scribd and Everand are billed separately, and cancelling one leaves the other running; SlideShare tags along with Scribd. 12
Trap two: the unlocks. Unused unlocks expire with the subscription, and books you unlocked become locked when the term ends; they reopen if you resubscribe with the same email. 12 Unspent unlock allowances otherwise roll over for up to six months before expiring. 4
Trap three: trials end the moment you cancel. Cancelling during a free trial ends access immediately, and the paid-plan rule — you keep what you already paid for until the billing period ends — does not apply. 9
Trap four: old plans. Everand discontinued its Legacy plan, and its help pages say cancelling a Legacy plan loses it for good along with the bundled Scribd and SlideShare access. 12
Refund window. Everand's help pages state that cancelling "doesn't reverse a payment that already went through," and route refund requests to a separate process. 12 Pausing is the cheaper option where it applies: web sign-ups can pause for up to 12 weeks, keeping unlocks and their place in the book they are reading. 12
I am cancelling my Everand subscription on the account registered to [email]. Confirm which company holds the billing record for it, confirm that the Scribd and SlideShare subscriptions on this account are separate, and tell me the date my unlocks expire.

Blinkist

Price. Twelve months of Premium at an intro $79.99 against a $99.99 renewal; twelve months of Pro at $139.99 against $174.99. 5
Path. Open Settings in the app or on the Blinkist website, tap Manage Subscription, scroll to the Danger Zone, select Turn off auto-renewal, and follow the prompts to the confirmation screen. 17
Trap one: deleting the account. Blinkist's own help pages state that deleting your account "won't cancel this subscription automatically," that "the two processes are not linked," and that deleting an account with a live subscription may mean continued charges. 18
Trap two: the store owns in-app purchases. A subscription bought in the iOS or Android app can only be cancelled through Apple or Google Play, and Blinkist asks for at least 24 hours' notice before a trial ends. 17
Timing. Blinkist's checkout says a subscription can be cancelled up to 24 hours before the end of the current billing period, with the cancellation effective at the end of the cycle. 5 Auto-renewal runs by default, and access continues to the end of the paid cycle. 10
Refund window. Blinkist runs a 14-day money-back guarantee for subscriptions bought on its website or through Google Play: email within the first 14 days of the initial purchase date and its support team will cancel and refund. App Store purchases go to Apple, and Blinkist states that it cannot override Apple's decision. 19
I am cancelling my Blinkist subscription on the account registered to [email]. Confirm the cancellation, the exact date it takes effect, whether the plan auto-renews before that date, and whether my purchase falls inside the 14-day money-back guarantee.

When Apple, Google Play, PayPal or Amazon owns the charge

Each rail answers only for payments it processed. A membership opened inside a phone app is charged by the store, and the seller's own account shows nothing to cancel.
Apple. Open Settings → your name → Subscriptions → the subscription → Cancel Subscription. You may have to scroll to find the button; a missing Cancel button or a red expiration message means Apple already treats it as cancelled. Cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends, and a subscription bought on a family member's Apple Account can only be cancelled by that person. 15
Google Play. Open subscriptions in Google Play, select the item, and tap Cancel subscription. Google Play states directly that "when you uninstall the app, your subscription won't cancel," and that access continues to the end of the period already paid. Some apps offer a pause of one week to three months instead, and an authorization hold can appear on your payment method up to 48 hours before a renewal. 11
PayPal. Open Settings → Payments, then Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments, select the merchant, and cancel the automatic payment there. The merchant's contact details sit on that same record, which is what you need when the membership itself still has to be closed. 20
Amazon. Amazon-family memberships — Kindle Unlimited among them — are managed under Memberships & Subscriptions, and the monthly digital charges are listed under Your Digital Orders. 14
Across these rails the same four patterns recur: a pause or a downgrade offered before the confirmation screen, a change that takes effect only at the end of the cycle, a store that can cancel only the charges it processed, and the belief that removing the app ends the subscription. 11

If a charge already posted

Build the packet before escalating: the statement line, the receipt, the account email, the term and price you agreed to, your cancellation request, the final status screen, and any case number.
For a debit taken from a bank account, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's instruction is to call the company and revoke permission for the automatic payment, follow up in writing, then call the bank or credit union and follow up in writing there too. Some banks offer a stop-payment order, which usually carries a fee. The bureau also states that cancelling an automatic payment does not cancel the underlying contract, so the seller cancellation has to happen as well. 21
For a card charge, call the card company promptly and send a written billing-error notice within 60 calendar days after the charge appeared on the statement. The card company then has 30 days to confirm receipt of the dispute in writing. Keep copies and note the dates of every call. 22
Two pieces of federal law are worth having in hand when a seller pushes back. Online negative-option sales — the free trial that converts, the subscription that renews by default — are governed by 15 U.S.C. § 8403, which makes it unlawful to charge a consumer through a negative option unless the seller clearly and conspicuously discloses all material terms before taking billing information, obtains express informed consent, and provides simple mechanisms for stopping the recurring charge. 23
The FTC's own rule, at 16 CFR Part 425, reaches prenotification plans only. 24 The amended version, which would have reached modern subscriptions more broadly, was vacated by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025 because the Commission had skipped a required preliminary regulatory analysis. In March 2026 the FTC opened a new rulemaking on the rule and took comments through April 13, 2026. 25 The FTC's consumer guidance on the same territory tells readers to learn the trial terms before handing over a card, put a calendar reminder in place before the trial ends, ask the card company to stop the payments when a seller won't let go, and report the problem at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. 26

Prevention: spend the balance before you close the account

  1. Spend the credits and unlocks first, and cancel after. This order is what this category asks for. Audible: use your credits before the end of the final billing period, because every title bought with a credit is yours to keep. 16 Everand: spend the unlocks before your last day, since the books you unlocked reopen with the same email if you come back. 12 Kindle Unlimited: return or finish what you have borrowed, because the borrows end at the next billing date. 13
  2. Check whether pausing beats cancelling for this vendor. Everand allows web sign-ups to pause for up to 12 weeks with unlocks and reading position intact. 12 Audible's pause keeps credits alive to their original expiry dates, and annual plans are ineligible. 16 Kindle Unlimited's pause lasts one month and resumes by itself. 13
  3. Buy the book instead of renting the library. Audible keeps selling titles without a membership, and purchased audiobooks stay in the library after cancellation. 16 At Everand's Standard price, one month buys roughly one unlocked book. 4
  4. Turn the renewal off on the day you subscribe, not the month it renews. Audible's trial continues by itself unless cancelled before it ends. 1 Blinkist wants the switch-off at least 24 hours before the cycle ends, and its auto-renewal is on by default. 5 Everand's trials ask for 24 hours' notice, and cancelling during a trial ends access immediately, so the safer move is to cancel the trial on the day you start it. 9
  5. Calendar three dates instead of one. The day before a trial ends, the next billing date, and the day the refund or money-back window closes — 14 days from purchase for Blinkist's website and Google Play sales, 19 and the credit-expiry date that Audible sets 12 months from issue. 1
  6. Put a merchant-locked virtual card under the next trial, with a spending cap below the subscription price. Privacy.com's personal plan is free on domestic purchases, and its cards can be locked to one merchant, capped, paused, or closed; a declined charge is a signal that arrives without a spam filter in front of it, and it works alongside the seller cancellation rather than replacing it. 27
  7. Let a tracker hold the calendar if you would rather not. CNET's review of Rocket Money puts its Premium tier at $6 to $12 a month, on a sliding scale, with a free seven-day trial, and notes that it will cancel subscriptions on your behalf; its bill-negotiation service takes 30% to 60% of the first year's savings. 28 Subtrakr is a smaller option that keeps recurring expenses in one dashboard and sends reminders before a renewal or a price change. 29

The kill list

Search 13 months for AUDIBLE, KINDLE, EVERAND, SCRIBD and BLINKIST, and remember that Everand posts as Scribd, Inc. 4 Read the receipt before the app, and cancel on the rail named there. Spend the credits and unlocks before you close the account, because they expire with it. 1216 Cancel Blinkist in Settings and delete the account afterwards, never the other way round. 18 Ask for the refund as a separate request with its own clock. 19 Keep the confirmation.
