Five sharp global headlines: uncertain Hormuz talks, Europe’s border response, an AI-led market lift, a China–U.S. tech clash and a deadly strike on Kyiv.

The first issue covers reports and events through 13:00 SAST on 5 August 2026. Each frame carries one development worth remembering.
  • World affairs. Donald Trump said U.S.–Iran talks were "very good" and that the Strait of Hormuz would open "very soon." Reuters also reports that Tehran denied Trump’s assertion that talks were under way, so reopening remains unsettled. 12
  • Politics. About 72,000 migrants entered Spain’s Ceuta enclave last week. EU interior ministers called for tougher action against smuggling and stronger returns policies; 22 of 27 member states urged coordinated action to protect the bloc’s external borders. 3
  • Markets. The pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.1%, Japan’s Nikkei rose 3.7% and the MSCI world index gained 0.4% as earnings and AI spending lifted sentiment. Brent crude stood at $79.95 a barrel in the report. 4
  • Technology. Reuters reported that Washington was drafting a national-security measure to bar imports of new Chinese optical transceivers used in data centres. Shares of several Chinese optical-module makers fell as much as 10%; the measure was still a proposal, not an enacted ban. 5
  • Breaking event. Reuters reported that Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon cruise missiles and 115 drones at Kyiv and the surrounding region. Ukrainian officials said at least 17 people were killed; air defences downed nearly 90% of the drones but none of the missiles. 6
