Florida leads the preseason vote as roster rules shift again (2026)

The Aug. 17–24 offseason changed the 2026–27 outlook through expectations and roster rules rather than game results. Florida took a clear lead in a new coaches survey, North Carolina published a roster with 11 newcomers, two women’s programs added 2027 recruits, and a federal appeals-court ruling put fifth-year eligibility back into motion.

Men’s basketball: Florida has the preseason consensus

CBS Sports’ Aug. 21 Candid Coaches survey asked nearly 100 Division I men’s coaches and assistants to name the best team for 2026–27. Florida received 55% of the votes, ahead of Duke at 16% and Tennessee at 7%. Connecticut and Illinois each received 5%; Arizona, Louisville, Michigan State and Texas also received votes. 1

The table is a preseason coaches survey, not the AP poll, coaches poll or NCAA NET. Its useful information is the size of Florida’s lead and the reason attached to it: continuity. Florida’s returning production gives the survey a roster explanation before the first game supplies a performance test. Lineup fit and health remain November questions.

North Carolina publishes a 16-player roster

North Carolina’s official Aug. 21 roster lists five returning players and 11 newcomers. The newcomers include six college transfers, one international player and four freshmen. First-year head coach Michael Malone signed the six transfers. 2

The transfer group includes guards Angelo Brizzi from Buffalo, Terrence Brown from Utah, Matt Able from NC State and Neo Avdalas from Virginia Tech; center Cameron Fens comes from South Dakota, and center Cade Bennerman joins after a redshirt season at Northwestern. Alexandros Samodurov is the international addition from Panathinaikos in Athens, Greece. The four freshmen are Maximo Adams, Sayon Keita, Malloy Smith and Kevin Thomas. 2

The roster settles the available personnel on paper: five returners supporting a larger group of new players. North Carolina went 24–9 last season, tied for fourth in the ACC and received a No. 6 NCAA Tournament seed, according to the announcement. The next question is how Malone divides minutes among six transfers, four freshmen and the returning core. 2

Women’s basketball: two 2027 recruiting signals

The women’s developments this week came from recruiting rather than games or standings.

Jones brings a documented production profile and a likely college position change. Golightly gives UNLV a separate four-star guard addition. The 2027 class is still a projection; the next roster questions are signing status, class size and eventual role.

Eligibility: the fifth-year picture changes again

A 2–1 panel decision from the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals halted, for now, a lower-court order that would have granted thousands of athletes an extra season. The lawsuits largely involve athletes who graduated from high school in 2022, whose college eligibility ended after last season and who were outside the NCAA’s new five-years-over-five rule. That rule starts next season. 5

The ruling also matters to basketball. An Ohio appeals court paused a similar injunction involving Xavier basketball player Filip Borovicanin and others. AP reported that the NCAA told schools they would face no NCAA punishment for allowing a player to compete between the July 31 lower-court ruling and the Aug. 21 appeals decision, while the NCAA still considered those players ineligible. 5

For coaches, the immediate effect is roster uncertainty. Some players planned for a fifth season may lose that path under the stay; other state-court orders remain active, and more lawsuits are expected. Incoming freshmen and returning fifth-year players therefore remain part of the same unresolved roster calculation. 5

The offseason boundary

No regular-season scores, weekly statistical leaders, conference standings or NCAA Tournament bubble movement existed for Aug. 17–24. A current AP poll, official coaches poll, NCAA NET table for both sports and dated KenPom efficiency snapshot also remained unavailable in the verified sources.

The usable preseason signals are narrower: coaches gave Florida a 55% share of the men’s consensus, North Carolina published a roster built around 11 newcomers, Oregon State and UNLV added 2027 women’s recruits, and the fifth-year eligibility dispute moved again in federal court. The next issue can measure those projections against actual games once the season begins.
