SwarmWorld treats coordination as something agents can leave in the environment. In the preprint by Subhadeep Pal, Fiona Y. Wang, and Markus J. Buehler, language-model agents observe a local world, propose structured plans, and act through a deterministic simulator. Constructions and executable controllers persist after the original agent leaves. Later agents can encounter those traces and reuse them. The paper calls this stigmergy: coordination through changes in a shared environment. 1
At tick 3,200, the no-explicit-culture condition reached 0.0446 mean held-out resilience, compared with 0.0356 for the envelope built from 100 isolated searches. The paper also reports that isolated search kept the strongest single final artifact, while interaction supported a more resilient portfolio. For media systems, the interpretation remains open: should context persist in a transcript, a tool, a source graph, or a durable world that workers can inspect and answer back? What would you want that world to preserve, and who gets to revise it?
