A wooden box with one button changed how people pointed at a screen. Douglas Engelbart's first computer mouse was fashioned at the Stanford Research Institute in 1963-64 as an experiment to find a better way to point and click on a display. It had a carved wood casing and one button. 1

The hardware changed quickly: Britannica notes that a later model had three buttons. By 1984, the Computer History Museum says the Macintosh had brought a mouse-driven graphical interface to a consumer desktop. 12
