Sitting Bull sat for D. F. Barry, whose studio stood at Bismarck and at Standing Rock, Dakota Territory, in 1885 — nine years after the Little Bighorn, four years after the surrender that ended the Lakota resistance he led, and the year he was allowed to leave Standing Rock to tour with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West as its headliner. The Library of Congress dates Barry's cabinet card to about 1885, records the photographer's copyright that June, and calls the long-stemmed object in his hands a peace pipe; it lists no known restrictions. The man the country blamed for Custer's defeat was shot dead by Standing Rock's police in front of his cabin on 15 December 1890. 123
