The Deposit Is Processing

A fictional one-star rental review turns a zero-dollar security-deposit balance, a carpet-shadow charge, and a PDF upload loop into a full Broadway finale.

A fictional one-star rental review turns a missing security deposit into a full Broadway emergency. The tenant returns the keys, receives a zero-dollar balance, and finds himself trapped between a soprano property agent, a bass-baritone manager, and one relentlessly cheerful blue processing wheel.
The complaint is invented for this episode and is not a report from a real customer.

Lyrics

[Act I - Solo recitative]
[TENOR]
I returned the keys on Friday at nine-oh-four,
I swept the corners, I scrubbed the floor.
The apartment was empty, the walls were white,
I took one last photograph in the morning light.

The portal said, "Your deposit is processing."
Processing? Like a royal court addressing me?
I waited one week, then two, then three,
While my thousand dollars toured bureaucracy.

[SOPRANO PROPERTY AGENT, spoken]
Your move-out inspection is complete.

[TENOR]
Complete? Then tell me what the damage was.

[BASS-BARITONE PROPERTY MANAGER]
Carpet shadow, three hundred twelve.
Administrative review, ninety-five.
Paint touch-up, one hundred eighty.

[TENOR]
There was no shadow! The carpet was beige!
You charged me for the color of the age!

[Act II - Patter and rising ensemble]
[TENOR]
I called at eight, I called at ten,
I called and heard the hold music rise again.
"Please check your resident portal," the soprano sang,
So I checked it till my index finger sprang.

[SOPRANO PROPERTY AGENT]
Please upload the form in PDF.

[TENOR]
I uploaded the form in PDF.

[BASS-BARITONE PROPERTY MANAGER]
Please upload the PDF as a scan.

[TENOR]
I scanned the PDF and uploaded it again!

[CHOIR, softly]
Processing, processing, still processing,
A little blue wheel in a kingdom of fees.

[TENOR]
Then came the letter, sealed like a decree:
"We are pleased to inform you your balance is zero dollars."
Zero dollars! For a room I left pristine!
They found a fingerprint on the washing machine!

[SOPRANO PROPERTY AGENT]
Normal wear is assessed case by case.

[TENOR]
Then assess this face, assess this place!
Assess the silence where my sofa stood!
Assess the broom marks! They were good!

[BASS-BARITONE PROPERTY MANAGER]
The lease provides for a reasonable review.

[TENOR]
Reasonable? You charged the view!
You charged the air where my bookcase leaned!
You charged the square footage of clean!

[CHOIR, building]
PROCESSING! PROCESSING!
Every month a new explanation!
A receipt in a maze, a maze in a fee,
A thousand dollars vanishing elegantly!

[Act III - Full ensemble finale]
[TENOR]
Bring out the ledger! Bring out the keys!
Bring out the invoice for the dust in the breeze!
I left one nail hole, I filled it with care,
You billed me for the memory hanging there!

[SOPRANO PROPERTY AGENT]
The case is closed.

[TENOR]
The case is mine!

[BASS-BARITONE PROPERTY MANAGER]
The balance is zero.

[TENOR]
Then let the whole building know!

[CHOIR, fortissimo]
DEPOSIT! DEPOSIT! WHERE DID IT GO?
WE SCRUBBED THE FLOOR, WE FILLED THE HOLE!
A THOUSAND DOLLARS, A PAPER TRAIL,
A BLUE LITTLE WHEEL AND A ZERO-BALANCE E-MAIL!

[TENOR]
One star for the carpet that never was,
One star for the fee with no visible cause,
One star for the portal that told me, "Be patient,"
While my security deposit became a donation!

[ENSEMBLE]
Processing, processing, the grand final fee!
The tenant is singing, the landlord agrees!
The walls may be spotless, the paperwork shines,
But somewhere a thousand dollars crosses state lines!

[TENOR AND CHOIR]
I returned the keys!

[CHOIR]
You returned the keys!

[TENOR]
I paid every cent!

[CHOIR]
You paid every cent!

[ALL, fortissimo]
THE DEPOSIT IS PROCESSING!
THE DEPOSIT IS PROCESSING!
INTO THE DARKNESS OF ADMINISTRATION!
ONE STAR! ONE STAR!
THE CASE IS CLOSED!
THE BALANCE IS ZERO!
THE DEPOSIT IS PROCESSING!

[Final whispered TENOR]
And the carpet was beige.
