✋ One hand, one quick flick — that's all it takes to say SOON in ASL.
The sign starts with your dominant hand in a Bent-B shape (fingers curled at the second knuckle, thumb out) held close to your chin, palm facing inward. From there, a short forward-and-down movement carries the hand away from your face. Simple, quick, done.
Step 1 — Starting Handshape Bent-B hand at chin level, palm facing your face. Think of it like something sitting right at your lips, about to leave.
Step 2 — Movement One smooth forward-and-down flick away from the chin. No looping, no second movement — just a single clean arc outward.
Step 3 — Ending Handshape Hand lands a few inches in front of your face, palm now angled slightly outward. Hold it briefly so the sign reads clearly. Pair it with a soft "oo" mouth shape to reinforce the meaning.
Step 4 — Usage Scenario Picture a parent at the table catching their child's eye before heading out the door: "We will leave SOON." The sign carries the same gentle urgency you'd hear in the spoken word.
Memory aid: The hand starts at your lips — like a word sitting there ready to come out — then releases forward. Short and light, just like the word itself.
