Best food buy: Costco Poppi. The 18-pack of 12-ounce cans is $14.99 after $5 off through Aug. 30, or about $0.83 per can. That is a clean sale price and a manageable pack for a two-person household that actually drinks it. Costco's 24-count Melona ice bars are also $3.70 off through Aug. 30, but a 24-pack of frozen treats is a freezer-space decision, not an automatic bargain. 1

Costco's current warehouse book is valid July 27 through Aug. 23, and its weekly page adds the Aug. 17 launch items. The most useful food numbers are the ones with both a sale price and a pack count: Poppi works out to roughly $0.83 per can, while Costco's 30-roll Charmin price works out to about $0.80 per roll. That calculation does not make toilet paper cheaper than a paper-towel coupon; it simply tells you what the package costs on its own terms. 1 2

BJ's current public deal list gives a useful expiration cliff. Puffs is $13.99 after the coupon through Aug. 19, and Bounty becomes $25.99 per 12-pack when the $8 savings is spread across a two-pack purchase. The Bounty math only works if you need 24 rolls and can store them. A one- or two-person household should treat that as a storage and usage decision, not as permission to buy two cases. The same caution applies to Costco's 30-roll Charmin pack and Costco's 24-count Melona freezer item. 4

The Sam's situation is the part that can make the "Costco is always cheapest" meme look smarter than it is. Sam's has real August electronics markdowns: the Beats Pill is $50.95 below its listed price, the LG SC9S is $300 below, and the HP ZBook is $800 below. But those are not the same models as Costco's Bose speaker, Bose soundbar, or Galaxy laptop. The correct conclusion is that Sam's can beat Costco for a shopper who wants one of those exact Sam's models, not that Sam's wins the electronics category. 3

Sam's public Instant Savings calendar is the bigger timing fact. The July 22-Aug. 16 book is marked confirmed, while the next Aug. 26-Sept. 20 book is listed as predicted. Make Costco the single planned store this week. The current book has the broadest verified sale coverage and the longest useful window: Aug. 23 for the main warehouse book, Aug. 30 for Poppi, Melona, the Galaxy Book4 Edge, and several other Aug. 17 items.

Grab only what fits your actual household:

Food: Poppi if you will finish 18 cans, or Melona only if your freezer has room. The 30-count Animal Crackers sale is a lunchbox quantity, not a sensible default for a small household. Costco lists the crackers at $3.20 off through Sept. 13. 1

Skip a second warehouse trip for travel unless you already have a destination in mind. Costco Travel has an August Spotlight with packages and cruises to Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and other destinations, with an Aug. 31 booking deadline. Its live offer page also lists a Disney Cruise Line deal with $150-$500 in instant savings and an Aug. 30 booking deadline. Sam's public travel page lists the shopping lanes but shows no comparable member price, and BJ's current voucher price is unavailable on its public pages. 8 9

Membership math

Use regular annual fees, not acquisition promotions, for a break-even decision. Costco Gold Star is $65 and Executive is $130, so the upgrade costs $65. At a 2% reward rate, Executive needs about $3,250 in eligible annual Costco or Costco Travel purchases to cover that upgrade. Costco excludes gas from the reward calculation, so fuel spending does not move that number. 10

Sam's Club is $60 for Club and $120 for Plus. Plus therefore adds $60 of annual cost. Its 2% Sam's Cash benefit reaches that amount at about $3,000 in qualifying annual spend, before considering Plus-only shipping, delivery, early shopping, pharmacy, optical, and tire benefits. Sam's is currently advertising a new-member promotion that prices the first year at $55 for Plus and $25 for Club through Sept. 30, but that is an acquisition offer, not the renewal math. 11

For BJ's, using $60 for Club and $110 for Club+ makes the upgrade difference $50. With 2% back on most in-club purchases, the simple reward break-even is about $2,500 in eligible annual BJ's spend. BJ's also says Club+ includes 2% back and its membership hub advertises average gas savings of 20 cents per gallon, but local pump volume and store availability still determine whether the upgrade pays off for you. 12

Next week's preview

The first cliff arrives before next Tuesday: BJ's Puffs and Bounty offers are scheduled to end Aug. 19. Costco's main book runs through Aug. 23, so Aug. 24 is the more important Costco transition date. Sam's next Instant Savings book is listed by KCL as predicted to begin Aug. 26, not as a current offer. The next scorecard should therefore recheck three things first: whether Sam's publishes the new book early for Plus members, whether Costco's Aug. 24 book supplies comparable food or paper rows, and whether BJ's exposes a readable coupon cycle instead of only a gas benchmark. 4 7

The practical verdict is narrower than a three-store sweep: shop Costco for the verified sale basket, shop Sam's for a named electronics deal, and use BJ's gas or the two-day paper-product window only when your local trip makes the arithmetic work. A deal that cannot survive pack-size math or an expiration check is not a winner.
