August 4 Warehouse Club Scorecard: Costco Wins the Freezer and Snack Aisles, BJ's Stays a Gas Stop

August 4 Warehouse Club Scorecard: Costco Wins the Freezer and Snack Aisles, BJ's Stays a Gas Stop

This week's scorecard finds Costco ahead on two verified food-sale comparisons, Sam's useful for transparent pantry and paper prices, and BJ's defensible mainly as a convenient fuel stop.

For the Aug. 3–9, 2026 shopping week. Prices are the public member-sale prices I could verify at publication time; warehouse, state, and account-level availability can differ.
The short version: Costco wins the two cleanest food comparisons this week. Sam's Club remains useful when you want a visible pantry or paper price. BJ's is a defensible fuel stop, but its public coupon pages did not expose enough item-level data to award it a product category.
That is a narrower verdict than a full three-chain catalog, by design. The strict filter here is an explicit sale, instant saving, or coupon price that is live during Aug. 3–9, not a private-label item that simply costs the same as last week.

Five decisions before you leave the house

  1. Buy the 24-count OREO Mini Frozen Dessert Sandwiches at Costco. The verified sale price is $6.59 after $3 off, versus $7.66 after $2 off at Sam's. Costco is cheaper by $1.07 on the same count. This is a freezer win only if your household can finish 24 frozen treats before they become freezer clutter. Costco's current coupon-book details and Sam's current Instant Savings summary both list the offer through Aug. 23 and Aug. 16, respectively.
  2. Take the Costco Frito-Lay mix if you are comparing snack cost per bag, not the checkout total. Costco lists 54 bags at $14.89 after $5 off; Sam's lists 50 bags at $16.48 after $2 off. Costco works out to about 27.6 cents per bag, Sam's about 33.0 cents. Costco is lower by roughly 5.4 cents per bag, but these are not identical pack sizes, so do not call it a same-SKU victory. The two sale windows are documented in the same Costco and Sam's book summaries.
  3. Do not announce a SPAM winner. Sam's has a readable 8-pack of 12-ounce cans at $19.98 after $5.58 off. Costco confirms $6.40 off its 8-pack, but the public evidence available for this issue does not show Costco's net price. A discount amount is not a checkout price. If SPAM is on your list, Sam's is the clean benchmark; Costco is a price-check stop, not the winner.
  4. Use BJ's as the gas stop only when the station is already on your route. The current BJ's chain-average tracker reports $3.801 per gallon for regular across 202 stations in 22 states, collected Aug. 4. AAA's national regular-gas average was $4.089 on Aug. 4. That is useful context, not a local Costco-versus-Sam's proof: no comparable national member-price feeds were readable for the other two chains. BJ's says its Club+ program saves an average of 20 cents per gallon, with ZIP-code availability and local pricing caveats. See the BJ's gas tracker, AAA fuel report, and BJ's membership page.
  5. Treat Costco Travel as a deadline check, not a reason to upgrade your membership. Costco Travel lists Hot Buys with book-by dates of Aug. 4 and Aug. 7, including $150 off Royalton Resort packages, $300 off a Marriott Cancun package, and $200 off Live Aqua. Those are real time-sensitive offers, but there was no readable Sam's or BJ's travel offer with a comparable public price and expiration. Open Costco Travel's offer page before booking; the Aug. 4 offers are same-day deadlines.

GasBJ's reported chain average $3.801/gal; AAA national average $4.089BJ's route edge, not a local three-way proof
The tissue row needs a little arithmetic. Costco's 10 boxes of 230 tissues total 2,300 tissues for $17.99, or about 78.3 cents per 100 tissues. Sam's 12 boxes of 160 totals 1,920 tissues for $14.44, or about 75.2 cents per 100. Sam's is lower by about 3.1 cents per 100 tissues, but the box count, tissue count, and likely household usage pattern are different. That is a useful shopping signal, not a universal claim that Sam's paper is cheaper.
The same caution applies to toilet paper. Charmin and Quilted Northern are different brands, and the public listings use both roll count and square footage. A 30-roll Charmin pack at Costco cannot be ranked against a 32-roll Quilted Northern pack at Sam's from roll count alone. If you have a brand preference, use the sale price and your usual consumption rate; do not let the larger roll number settle the question.

Where the evidence stops

Costco's official Warehouse Savings page shows the current book as valid July 27 through Aug. 23 and warns that warehouse prices can vary by location, online channel, Business Center, Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. It documents savings on items such as Premier Protein, Charmin, Tide, Gatorade, Welch's Fruit Snacks, and Bridgestone tires. The current Costco coupon-book detail supplies net prices for the specific food and household rows used above.
Sam's official membership page confirms Instant Savings, member-only fuel savings, and 2% Sam's Cash for Plus members, but the public Instant Savings catalog returned a blocked or incomplete page in this run. The readable Sam's Club monthly-ad summary puts the current book at July 22 through Aug. 16 and provides the item-level prices above. Plus members should still check their account for any access timing or targeted offer that is not visible in the public summary. An earlier-access assumption is not a substitute for a visible price.
BJ's public coupon pages exposed campaigns and category tiles, but not auditable current item rows with a product, savings amount, net price, and expiration. That means BJ's does not get a made-up frozen-food or paper win this week. For a member who is already driving past a BJ's station, the public gas evidence is enough to justify checking the pump. It is not enough to plan a separate product haul.

The practical route

One-store route: Costco is the best single stop if your list is mostly frozen snacks, packaged snacks, a Costco Travel booking, or Bridgestone tires. Put the OREO and Frito-Lay offers on the grab list, then add only the Costco items you already consume. The store's book runs through Aug. 23, so there is no need to convert a two-person household into a snack warehouse today.
Two-store route: Add Sam's when you need SPAM, facial tissue, or a clearly priced paper and household replenishment. The Sam's book ends Aug. 16, and some items are smaller or more practical purchases than the Costco pack. Sam's is also the better place to resolve a question Costco's public evidence cannot answer: what the actual net SPAM price is at checkout.
BJ's add-on: Stop for fuel if the station is convenient and your local price confirms the advantage. Do not make a BJ's merchandise detour based on this week's public coupon page; the item evidence is not there.
For one- and two-person households, the best deal is often the pack you can finish. The 24 frozen sandwiches, 50- or 54-bag snack mixes, tissue bundles, and 8-can SPAM packs all need a storage and consumption check. Freezer space, pantry humidity, and the number of people actually eating the item matter more than a dollar of headline savings. A low unit price that turns into waste is not a low household cost.

Membership math: the upgrade has a hurdle

Costco Executive costs $130 total annually, or $65 more than a regular Gold Star membership, and earns a 2% reward on qualified purchases. The simple break-even calculation is $65 divided by 2%, or $3,250 in eligible annual spend. Gasoline and several other excluded categories do not count, so use qualified merchandise and Costco Travel purchases rather than your entire Costco card statement. The official Executive terms also state that the reward is capped at $1,250 and is not guaranteed to cover the upgrade fee.
Sam's Plus costs $120 annually versus $60 for Club, a $60 spread. Its current membership page lists 2% Sam's Cash for Plus members, producing a simple break-even of $3,000 in eligible annual spend before considering delivery, shipping, fuel, or other Plus benefits. New members joining through the current offer can see $55 for the first year of Plus and $25 for Club; the official Sam's page says the offer is for new members and runs through Sept. 30, 2026, subject to its terms.
BJ's Club+ advertises 2% back on most BJ's purchases and an average 20-cent-per-gallon gas saving, but the public membership page used here did not display the annual Club+ fee. The honest math is therefore conditional: once your account shows the upgrade spread, divide that fee by 2% for a merchandise-only break-even, then separately value the gas benefit. The BJ's membership terms say savings are based on OPIS data and are not available in every ZIP code. Do not use a guessed fee to make the upgrade look attractive.

Expiration watch for next week

The immediate cliff is Costco Travel: several Hot Buys need to be booked Aug. 4, with another group ending Aug. 7. Sam's Huggies wipes offer is listed through Aug. 9, while the broader Sam's Instant Savings book runs through Aug. 16. Costco's current Warehouse Savings book runs through Aug. 23, followed by a new book beginning Aug. 24.
Next Tuesday's comparison should recheck the Sam's book as it approaches its Aug. 16 end, look for a readable BJ's item coupon cycle, and verify local pump prices before calling any gas winner. For this week, the conclusion is deliberately simple: Costco for the two verified snack comparisons, Sam's for a few transparent pantry and paper checks, and BJ's for fuel when the route and local price make sense. Costco is not always cheapest; this week it just has the cleanest proof.
