Three Trails Worth the Drive This Week — June 3–10

Three picks this week, spread across Alberta, Virginia, and Wyoming. Each one has a date-specific reason to go now: one opened its gates for the 2026 season just 72 hours ago, one sits at the overlap of peak waterfall flow and peak rhododendron bloom (a window that closes in a few weeks), and one is the best wildlife-watching corridor in North America — and right now it's packed with grizzlies, wolves, and bison calves.

Moraine Lake Road opened for 2026 on June 1. That makes this week literally the first week you can get there by any method except snowshoes. 1 The shuttle season runs through October 12, but early June has something mid-summer can't match: the lake is still partially thawed, open turquoise water alongside ice remnants, with the Valley of the Ten Peaks still white behind it. 2 The turquoise color is caused by glacial rock flour (fine silt ground by glaciers) suspended in the meltwater. It gets more saturated as June progresses, but the ice-and-turquoise combination visible right now won't be there in July.

Trail: Rockpile Trail — 0.8 km (0.5 mi) round trip, ~30m elevation gain, Easy. A short rocky staircase leads to the classic viewpoint of the lake and valley. Estimated time: 20–30 minutes. The Moraine Lakeshore Trail (3 km round trip, Easy) is also accessible, with snow-covered sections but manageable for anyone in waterproof boots. 3

Current conditions: The Rockpile is open and accessible but expect wet and muddy footing with slippery sections — Parks Canada's June 1 trail report is explicit: stay on designated trails and viewpoints. 3 Consolation Lakes Trail (6 km round trip) has snow-covered sections and active post-holing risk — not recommended without gaiters and trekking poles at minimum. 3 Waterproof hiking boots are essential across the board.

Getting there: Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles year-round — access is exclusively via Parks Canada shuttles, Roam Public Transit (Super Pass required for the Lake Connector), or licensed commercial operators. 1 Shuttles depart every 30 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Lake Louise Park and Ride (Lake Louise Ski Resort, 1 Whitehorn Road); last return at 7:30 p.m. 1 The Lake Louise area is 55 km west of Banff townsite; Calgary to Lake Louise is approximately 185 km (about 2 hours). 4

Shuttles and reservations: 40% of seats were released when bookings opened April 15. The remaining 60% are released at 8 a.m. MDT two days before departure — meaning seats for June 5 release on June 3, and so on through the week. 1 Reservation fee is $3.50 online (non-refundable). Parking at Lake Louise Park and Ride is free for reservation holders. No cell service at Moraine Lake. 1

Fees: A valid Parks Canada pass is required. The Canada Strong Pass (free admission + 25% off camping) starts June 19 — visitors this week pay standard rates. 4

One note on Banff townsite: A brief period of heavy snowmelt and rain left several riverside trails near town flooded — Fenland Loop and Marsh Trail remain closed as of June 2. 5 Moraine Lake trails are unaffected by those closures, but sturdy waterproof footwear matters everywhere in the park right now. 3

Dark Hollow Falls drops over a series of rock ledges into a tributary of the Rose River, and right now it's running as hard as it gets all year. 6 Rhododendrons typically peak along the Blue Ridge from early to mid-June, 7 and recent reports put the trail in good condition with convenient parking. 8 That combination — full waterfall flow, flowers in bloom, and Skyline Drive fully open — makes the next few weeks the strongest window for this trail before summer heat and humidity arrive in late June.

Trail: 1.4 miles round trip, 440 ft elevation gain, Moderate. The trail descends steeply along the creek to the falls and returns the same way — the NPS is direct about it: "This trail is short, but very steep and rocky. The return climb is challenging! Know your limits and take your time, especially when the trail is wet and slippery." 6 Estimated time: about 1 hour 15 minutes. No pets allowed on this trail (the Rose River Falls Loop at Mile 49.4 is the pet-friendly alternative). 6

Parking and access: Dark Hollow Falls parking area is at Skyline Drive Mile 50.7, Central District. The trailhead is in the lot. No advance reservation required — day hikers on waterfall trails in the Central District do not need the Old Rag day-use ticket ($2/person), which applies only to Old Rag Mountain. 9 From Washington, D.C., Shenandoah is about 75 miles (approximately 1.5–2 hours via I-66 and US-340 to the Front Royal entrance). 7

New for 2026: Starting June 1, Shenandoah is running a traffic safety campaign on Skyline Drive through November 15 — expect periodic checkpoints at all four park entrances and along the drive itself. Shenandoah's acting superintendent Eric Yount stated: "We want visitors to enjoy the overlooks and trails, but we have a zero-tolerance policy for driving while impaired in national parks." 10 Nothing that affects hiking logistics, but worth knowing before the drive.

Fees: $30 per vehicle (7-day pass), $25 motorcycle, $15 per person on foot or bike. Shenandoah has been cashless since July 2025 — credit/debit only. America the Beautiful pass accepted. June 14 (Flag Day) is a free entry day. 9

Naturalist Journeys, which runs guided wildlife tours here, says "in early June few places match Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley for viewing the dynamics of large predators and their prey." 11 The Slough Creek Trail — a 3.4-mile round trip to the first meadow — gets you off the road and into it. Snow is gone from the first meadow, the trail is passable (with some downed trees to navigate around), and the area has been posted as a Bear Frequenting Area since May 18. 12 That designation is both a safety flag and a wildlife signal: grizzlies are out, wolves are active, and the bison calves born in late April through early June — the ones locals call "red dogs" for their reddish-brown coats — are currently at their most visible. 13

On May 26, a Yellowstone Adventure Tours guide reported four wolves and a grizzly bear fighting over a carcass in Lamar Valley. 14 That's not a guaranteed repeat, but it reflects what early June looks like in this valley.

Trail: 3.4 miles round trip to first meadow, ~500 ft elevation gain, Moderate. The trail begins with a steep climb, then descends into an open meadow where Slough Creek meanders through prime wildlife habitat. Estimated time: 2–5 hours depending on how long you spend scanning for animals. 15 An optional extension adds 2.6 miles each way to the second meadow, but that crossing requires fording Slough Creek, which NPS currently lists as too swift and deep to cross safely. 12 The trail follows what NPS describes as "a historic wagon trail into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness." 15 The trail has not been cleared of downfall — expect some downed trees on the route.

Wildlife safety: NPS requires maintaining at least 100 yards from bears, wolves, and cougars, and at least 25 yards from all other animals including bison and elk. 13 Hike in groups of 3 or more, carry bear spray, and make noise. Bear spray is available to rent at the Canyon Village kiosk.

Getting there: Take the Northeast Entrance Road — the only Yellowstone road open year-round to regular vehicles. 16 The Slough Creek trailhead is accessed via a dirt road toward Slough Creek Campground; park beside the vault toilet. From Bozeman, MT, the drive to Lamar Valley is approximately 101 miles (about 2.5 hours). From Jackson, WY, the drive crosses the entire park — over 4.5 hours — and isn't viable as a day trip. 17

Road delays: The Gardner River High Bridge construction on the Mammoth–Tower Junction stretch is causing single-lane delays of up to 15 minutes, 24 hours a day through late October. 16 Add 30 minutes to your drive estimate.

Fees and permits: $35 per private vehicle, valid 7 days. No timed-entry reservation required for summer 2026. 18 America the Beautiful pass accepted. June 14 is a free entry day at all national parks.
