Makhachev retains, Shields wins two belts: Aug. 10–16 recap and Aug. 17–23 preview

Islam Makhachev retained at UFC 330 and Claressa Shields won two middleweight belts; UFC Sacramento and three major boxing cards lead the Aug. 17–23 watch list.

The week in one view

Aug. 10–16 was a week of retained gold, new gold and a farewell. Islam Makhachev kept the UFC welterweight title at UFC 330; Claressa Shields moved down three weight classes to take Kaye Scott’s WBC and WBA middleweight belts; Izaiah Dent and Jayden Britton won WBA/NABA titles in Sugar Land; and Buenos Aires produced four WBA-affiliated title results. 1234
The forward look is concentrated around Saturday, Aug. 22: UFC Sacramento has a ranked middleweight main event and two useful heavyweight/light-heavyweight tests, while Las Vegas hosts Rolando Romero–Teofimo Lopez and London stages George Liddard–Dario Morello for the vacant European middleweight title. Amanda Serrano’s TikTok LIVE card arrives Friday.

UFC 330: Makhachev controls five, Barboza closes his UFC career

UFC 330 took place Aug. 15 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. The five-fight main card opened with three stoppages, then closed with two championship decisions. 5

Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado GarryMakhachev def. Machado Garry by unanimous decision, 49-46, 49-46, 48-47Makhachev retained the UFC welterweight title, recorded his 17th straight UFC win and became the fifth two-division champion to successfully defend titles in both divisions. Machado Garry fell to 17-2.
Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian RobertsonDern def. Robertson by unanimous decision, 49-46, 49-46, 48-47Dern retained the women’s strawweight title and earned a fourth consecutive win. Robertson spent much of Round 5 on top, but the late rally did not change the result.
Jalin Turner vs. Kauê FernandesTurner def. Fernandes by KO/TKO, Round 1, 0:39Turner landed the left hand that ended the fight after Fernandes missed with a spinning attack. It was Turner’s second straight first-round stoppage.
Dustin Stoltzfus vs. Mansur Abdul-MalikStoltzfus def. Abdul-Malik by submission, Round 2, 4:25Stoltzfus turned a home-state appearance into the biggest win of his career by taking control with wrestling and grappling, then finishing late in the second.
Edson Barboza vs. Esteban RibovicsRibovics def. Barboza by KO/TKO, Round 2, 1:32Ribovics overwhelmed the veteran with pressure and punches. Barboza removed his gloves and placed them in the cage afterward, ending a 16-year UFC career.
Makhachev’s win was less about a signature finish than about solving Garry’s range and late-round resistance. The champion mixed early grappling with a second-round knockdown, then returned to wrestling in the fourth and fifth. Garry had the cleaner moments in portions of the middle rounds, but Makhachev banked enough control to make the cards decisive. 1

Boxing: Shields takes two belts; four more titles move

Atlanta: Shields stops Scott and reopens the middleweight map

Claressa Shields stopped Kaye Scott at 1:38 of Round 6 on Aug. 15 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, ending the fight after Scott’s corner threw in towels. Shields improved to 19-0 (4 KOs), won Scott’s WBC and WBA middleweight titles, and became the first woman to headline at the arena, where Fightnews reported a crowd of more than 16,000. 2
The move was significant because Shields came down three weight classes for the challenge. BoxingScene reported that she immediately named unified IBF/WBO champion Tamm Thibeault as a possible next target, which gives the division a clear belt-unification storyline rather than a routine defense. 8
The DAZN undercard also produced useful title movement: Troy Isley outpointed Joseph Hicks over 10 rounds; Ashleyann Lozada beat Paulette Cuesta by unanimous decision for the WBA Gold women’s junior-featherweight belt; and Bernice Ferreira won the WBC women’s junior-lightweight title when Caroline Veyre was disqualified at 1:04 of Round 8 after repeated holding warnings and point deductions. 28

Gold Coast: Teremoana stays perfect

Teremoana Teremoana stopped DeAndre Savage in Round 2 on Aug. 12 at The Star Gold Coast in Queensland. The Australian Olympian moved to 12-0 with 12 knockouts; Savage fell to 11-2 with 11 knockouts. Michael Zerafa also returned to the win column, stopping Alejandro Ortiz at 3:00 of Round 8 in the support bout. The show was carried locally on Fox Sports and Kayo and internationally on DAZN. 9
Teremoana has still not been extended beyond the second round as a professional. That is a striking record, but this opponent did not answer the larger question about how he handles a durable, experienced heavyweight; promoter Eddie Hearn said Teremoana is expected to appear on the Anthony Joshua–Tyson Fury undercard later this year. 9

Sugar Land and Buenos Aires: the deeper title ledger

Sugar Land’s Aug. 15 report was led by two new WBA/NABA champions. Izaiah Dent won a split decision over Chavon Stillwell, 98-92, 96-94 and 95-96, to claim the NABA light-heavyweight title and hand Stillwell his first professional loss. Jayden Britton then beat Bruno Pola Ruiz by unanimous decision, 80-72, 78-74 and 77-75, for the NABA super-middleweight title. 3
Mauricio Quintanilla’s second-round TKO of Jerrell Mayweather at 1:35 earned the card’s $5,000 Knockout of the Night bonus. The same report also recorded second-round stoppages for Steven Grandy and Joshua Franco, plus a first-round knockout by Ivan Vasquez. 3
Buenos Aires’ Aug. 16 WBA KO to Drugs card added four more title results. Maximiliano Robledo beat John Laryea by ninth-round disqualification in a world-title eliminator; Cristian Ayala stopped Algerbis González in three rounds to win the WBA Fedelatin welterweight title; Piergiulio Ruhe stopped David Alvarez in Round 7 to retain the WBA Gold super-welterweight title; and Samuel Carmona retained the WBA Intercontinental flyweight title with a unanimous decision over Josber Pérez. Florencia López and Sofiane Oumiha also won unanimous decisions in the other two bouts. 4

Rolando Romero vs. Teofimo LopezSaturday, Aug. 22 — T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. PBC pay-per-view on DAZN and Prime Video.Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) vs. Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) — WBA welterweight title. Romero makes his first defense; Lopez is trying to become a three-division champion. A July 31 market snapshot listed Lopez -265 and Romero +200.The event’s published support includes Yoenli Hernandez (10-0, 9 KOs) vs. Francisco Daniel Veron (17-1-1, 10 KOs), a 10-round middleweight attraction. Romero and Lopez trained and sparred together before reaching championship level, so the title fight carries genuine history rather than a manufactured rivalry. 141516
George Liddard vs. Dario MorelloSaturday, Aug. 22 — Copper Box Arena, London. DAZN worldwide. Listed start: 2 p.m. ET.George Liddard (14-0, 8 KOs) vs. Dario Morello (26-1, 4 KOs) — 12 rounds for the vacant European middleweight title.Jimmy Sains (12-0, 10 KOs) vs. Tom Cowling (15-1, 4 KOs) is the published Commonwealth-title support bout. The show moved from York Hall to Copper Box because of temporary venue issues. 1718
The cleanest competitive questions are different across the cards. Sacramento asks whether Hernandez can re-enter the middleweight title picture and whether Petrino’s heavyweight move holds against a veteran. Las Vegas puts a defending champion against a two-division champion in a market that favors the challenger. London and Temecula are more straightforward title-collection tests on paper, but each has a distinct reason to matter: Liddard–Morello has a vacant European belt, while Serrano’s stoppage record and TikTok distribution give her fight a legacy and access angle beyond the titles themselves.
