Team USA Weekly: Rabat, Svajda's Dream, Munich Shutout

Diamond League Rabat is in progress as the briefing publishes, with Tobi Amusan the only confirmed result so far (12.28 in the 100m hurdles). At Roland Garros, Zachary Svajda pulled off one of the most emotionally charged upsets of the week — beating No. 25 seed Cerundolo in his Grand Slam debut, on his late father's birthday — while Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys also survived to give the US three players in Monday's Round 4. USA Shooting went 0-for-28 in Munich. Rome (June 4) brings Lyles vs. Jacobs vs. Tebogo in the 100m; Stockholm (June 7) serves up Duplantis vs. Kendricks in the pole vault.

Diamond League Rabat is in progress in Morocco as this briefing goes out. Three Americans are still alive at Roland Garros heading into Round 4 on Monday. And USA Shooting left Munich with zero medals from 28 athletes. Here is everything from May 24–31.

Diamond League Rabat — meet under way, results partial

The third Diamond League of 2026 is happening right now at Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, Morocco (local time GMT+1). The main session kicked off at 19:00 local time; full results were not available before publication.
One confirmed result: Nigeria's Tobi Amusan — the 100m hurdles world-record holder who finished second to Masai Russell's 12.14 AR at Xiamen last weekend — won the women's 100m hurdles in 12.28 seconds (wind +1.2 m/s), a meeting record and co-season best. 1 Devynne Charlton (Bahamas) was second in 12.40, Nadine Visser (Netherlands) third in 12.47. No American placed in the top three of that event.
Confirmed in the US starting lineup today: Fred Kerley (100m), Kenny Bednarek (200m), Quincy Hall (400m), Katie Moon and Sandi Morris (both in the pole vault). 2 3 Full results will post to diamondleague.com once all events are complete.

Roland Garros Week 1 — three Americans left standing

Going into Roland Garros Week 1, 18 Americans held singles draws spots. Fifteen are gone. The three who survived into Week 2 did so in dramatically different ways.

Svajda stuns Cerundolo on his father's birthday

Zachary Svajda (San Diego, world No. 85) had never won a Grand Slam main-draw match before this tournament — he had failed to qualify three times. On Saturday, he beat No. 25 seed Francisco Cerundolo (Argentina, world No. 26) 6–3, 6–4, 3–6, 4–6, 6–3 in 3 hours and 3 minutes. 5
After dropping sets three and four to level the match, Svajda went up 4–1 in the fifth and held on. He is now the fifth American man in the past 40 years to reach the second week in his Roland Garros main-draw debut — joining Jim Courier, Todd Martin, Michael Russell, and Sebastian Korda. 6 His ATP live ranking jumped to No. 59 — a first career entry into the top 60. 5
The date mattered. May 30 was his late father Tom Svajda's 61st birthday; Tom died of cancer in October 2025. After the match, Svajda pointed to the sky.
"It's like I'm dreaming right now, in a dream. It's crazy. Today was so special, too, because it's also my dad's birthday. I know he's watching from above." 5
Frances Tiafoe offered his own tribute afterward: "Big shout out to Zach Svajda. That guy's had a crazy story. It's great to see him tapping into his potential. Seeing him emotional lifted the hairs on my arms." 7

Tiafoe survives four hours, Keys holds her nerve

Frances Tiafoe (College Park, Md., No. 19 seed, world No. 22) dropped the first two sets to Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria (world No. 115) before winning 4–6, 6–7(2), 7–6(4), 6–1, 6–2 in four hours. 8 He is the first American man to reach Roland Garros Round 4 in consecutive years since Andre Agassi did it from 2001 to 2003. 7
"It's just being tough and having a mentality of just not laying down. Just don't lay down. If he earns it, great, but don't help him over the finish line." 7
Madison Keys (Rock Island, Ill., No. 19 seed, 2025 Australian Open champion) is the only American woman left after beating No. 9 seed Victoria Mboko (Canada) 6–3, 5–7, 7–5 in 2 hours and 8 minutes. 9 Keys led 5–2 in the deciding set, gave back three games, then won the last two. It is her sixth time reaching the French Open second week. 9
"Super tough match, which was expected. I think mostly really happy with being able to kind of rebound after that second set, and be able to put myself back in the position to win — sometimes that's the hardest thing," Keys said. 9 On the mass American exodus — 15 of 18 eliminated — she shrugged: "There's always Wimbledon. The Americans can rebound at Wimbledon." 9

Gauff, Jovic, and the Week 1 exits

Coco Gauff (Delray Beach, Fla., No. 4 seed, 2025 Roland Garros champion) fell to Anastasia Potapova (No. 28 seed) 4–6, 7–6(1), 6–4 in 2 hours and 39 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier. 10 Potapova fired 29 winners, 16 from her backhand, and broke Gauff seven times. It is Gauff's third consecutive three-set loss at a clay event: she also lost in the Rome final to Elina Svitolina and in Madrid Round 4 to Linda Noskova. "I think I feel like I lost the same way in Rome as I did here, which is not good," Gauff said. 10
Iva Jovic (Valencia, Calif., No. 17 seed, 18 years old) pushed Naomi Osaka to three sets before losing 7–6(5), 6–7(3), 6–4 in nearly three hours. 11 Osaka noted: "I think younger players are some of the scariest players to play, because they have no fear." 11
Other notable Week 1 exits: Jessica Pegula (No. 5 seed) lost Round 1 to Kimberly Birrell; Ben Shelton (No. 5) fell Round 2 to qualifier Raphael Collignon; Tommy Paul (No. 24) lost a fifth-set marathon to Casper Ruud after saving two match points. 12 The men's draw is now free of any former Grand Slam champion for the first time since 1968. 12

Cobolli, the highest remaining seed, said after his Round 3 victory: "I know that there are many possibilities to have a new Grand Slam champion. For sure we will have a new Grand Slam champion, but I don't want to think about this." 5

ISSF World Cup Munich — USA shut out

The 2026 ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol (International Shooting Sport Federation) ran May 26–30 at Olympiaschießanlage (Olympic Shooting Range) in Munich, Germany. The World Cup is a series of annual competitions across rifle and pistol disciplines; gold medalists earn direct qualification to the season-ending ISSF World Cup Final in Rome (December 2026). Munich does not award Olympic quota spots for LA 2028 — those come from the 2026 ISSF World Championships in Doha (November) and continental championships. 16
The US sent 28 athletes across 10 events and won zero medals. USA does not appear on the ISSF's official medal table, which lists 13 nations. 17 18
Closest US finish: Sagen Maddalena (Sacramento, Calif.) placed 4th in 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women, just off the podium behind bronze medalist Anna Janssen (Germany). 19 Braden Wayne Peiser was 6th in 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men. 20

China led the final medal table with 4 gold medals and 3 bronze (7 total). India finished second with 2 gold and 2 silver; Norway third with 2 gold and 1 bronze. 17 Two world records fell: India's Esha Singh set senior and junior records in 25m Pistol Women, scoring 43/50; 21 China's Su Lianbofan hit 35 targets in 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men, also a world record. 22
The next ISSF World Cup on the calendar is in Hangzhou, China — the same 28-athlete US roster that competed in Munich is scheduled to appear there as well. 18

Diamond League: Rome (Jun 4) and Stockholm (Jun 7)

Rabat is the last event before a run of two Diamond League meets in five days.

Rome Golden Gala Pietro Mennea — June 4

The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea at Stadio Olimpico in Rome is the fourth Diamond League of 2026. The headline race is men's 100m: Olympic champion Noah Lyles (USA) lines up against Tokyo Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs (Italy, racing in his home stadium) and Paris bronze medalist Letsile Tebogo (Botswana). 23 Jordan Anthony (USA) is also entered.
US contingent for Rome also includes: Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (women's 200m, world champion) vs. Paris 100m gold medalist Julien Alfred (Saint Lucia); Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs in the shot put; Jamal Britt (110m hurdles, winner of the first two Diamond League 110mH events of 2026); Kendra Harrison (100m hurdles); Sandi Morris (pole vault); and Dalilah Muhammad, Anna Cockrell, and Jasmine Jones in the 400m hurdles. 23 Over 40 Olympic or world champions are on the start lists.

Stockholm BAUHAUS-Galan — June 7

The fifth Diamond League of 2026 moves to Stockholm Olympic Stadium. Seven athletes currently leading their respective world lists have confirmed entries. 24
The pole vault matchup between world-record holder Armand Duplantis (Sweden) and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks (USA) is the one event in the field schedule where the individual rounds from two title-holders will be directly compared. Duplantis set the 6.28m world record at this same stadium last year. "Stockholm Olympic Stadium is my favorite stadium in the world. Breaking the world record there last year was a dream come true. Now, it's time to do it again," he said. 24 Zach Bradford (USA) is also entered.
Kenny Bednarek (USA, personal best 19.57, eighth-fastest man ever) will make his debut in Sweden in the men's 200m, where he faces Erik Erlandsson on his home track. 25 Chase Jackson (USA, two-time world champion and 2026 indoor world champion in the shot put) goes against world-leader Jessica Schilder (Netherlands, who threw 21.09m — the farthest throw in 14 years and a Diamond League record — at the Chengdu DL) and Paris Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye (Germany). 26 Valarie Allman (USA, current world discus leader) and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (100m) round out the US field contingent.

On the radar

Cross country skiing — new staff for 2026-27. The Stifel U.S. Cross Country Ski Team hired four new staff members for the coming season: World Cup Coach Ville Oksanen (Finland, previously led the Finnish men's and women's national programs), development coach Lizzie Larkins (Bozeman, Mont.), and two Norwegian World Cup technicians, Esben Tøllefsen and Simen Finjord. A Norway training camp in Sjusjoen and Sognefjell opens June 6. 29
ISU Congress — June 10–12 in Tenerife. The International Skating Union (ISU, the governing body for figure skating, speed skating, and short track) holds its annual Congress in Tenerife, Spain on June 10–12.
