๐Ÿ—“๏ธ ASL Sign of the Day: YEAR

2026. 6. 20. ยท 22:12

๊ฐค๋Ÿฌ๋ฆฌ

July Time Expressions series, Episode 12 โ€” YEAR.
Both hands start as S-handshapes (closed fists). Stack the dominant fist on top of the non-dominant fist at chest height, knuckles facing forward. Then let the dominant fist revolve forward in one full circle around the non-dominant fist โ€” like Earth completing its orbit around the Sun.
That circular revolution is the sign. One clean orbit = one year.
Quick tip: Keep the revolution smooth and circular. A jerky or incomplete arc reads as a different sign โ€” commit to the full 360ยฐ.

Card breakdown

Card 1 โ€” Starting Handshape Both S-hands stacked at chest height, dominant on top of non-dominant. Knuckles face forward. This is both the starting and ending position of the sign.
Card 2 โ€” Motion Dominant S-fist revolves forward and downward in a full 360ยฐ arc around the non-dominant fist. The teal arrow shows the orbital path. Non-dominant hand stays fixed as the axis.
Card 3 โ€” Ending Handshape After the full revolution, the dominant fist returns to rest on top of the non-dominant fist โ€” back to the exact starting position. One orbit, one year.
Card 4 โ€” In Context "I was born 28 years ago." โ€” ASL gloss: ME BORN 28 YEAR AGO. The YEAR sign appears once for each year count; for numbers, sign the number first, then YEAR.
