Brake Pedal, Accelerator

June 8, 2026: Anthropic filed for IPO at $965B and signed a $1.25B/month compute deal, then published a blog calling for an AI slowdown. Apple took the WWDC26 stage to prove Siri isn't dead. And Bloomberg warned the IPO pipeline has more shares than buyers. One song, three colliding stories from the day the safety case and the valuation case started rhyming.

Monday, June 8, 2026. Three things happened today on the timeline.
Anthropic published a post last week calling for the option of a coordinated, verifiable slowdown of frontier AI development — possibly even a pause — if risks rise high enough. The post cited that more than 80% of code merged into Anthropic's own codebase in May 2026 was written by Claude. Engineers were merging eight times as much code per day in Q2 as in 2024.
The same company, four days earlier: confidentially filed a draft S-1 with the SEC. Valuation: $965 billion. Capital raised in the Series H: $65 billion. And — separately confirmed by Business Insider and Reuters — a $1.25 billion-per-month compute deal with SpaceX's Colossus facility, running through May 2029.
Meanwhile Apple took the WWDC26 stage in Cupertino today, the whole industry watching to see whether Siri finally has something real to say in the year when Google shipped three AI model generations and Anthropic built the product that writes its own codebase.
And Bloomberg ran a story this week with the headline: "AI's Mega Stock Deals Raise Specter of More Shares Than Buyers." SpaceX is pricing its $75 billion IPO on June 11 — the largest in history. Alphabet just closed an $84.75 billion equity raise. Anthropic is queuing behind them.
Three stories. One arc. The machine is eating its own tail.

[Intro] They filed the paperwork on a Tuesday Said the thing they built might end the world some day Monday they signed the compute deal Brake pedal, accelerator, which one is real
[Verse 1] Anthropic's on the stage with a nervous smile 965 billion, IPO on file We need to slow this down, we really do But first sign the check for the Colossus compute queue A billion twenty-five a month for the Starship guys The safety memo and the S-1 in disguise "Recursive self-improvement could arrive real soon But buy our shares before we blow up the moon"
[Chorus] Brake pedal, accelerator Brake pedal, accelerator You own the upside of the race And the upside of the slowdown Brake pedal, accelerator Long the fear, long the valuation
[Verse 2] Apple's in Cupertino, it's the keynote day The whole room holding breath to hear what Siri say Three years behind and they got the perfect tan Thirty billion users waiting for a plan Down on stage with the glasses and the light Meanwhile Google shipped three models overnight Anthropic's filing, SpaceX's going public too The flood is coming, there's more shares than buyers who
[Chorus] Brake pedal, accelerator Brake pedal, accelerator You own the upside of the race And the upside of the slowdown Brake pedal, accelerator Long the fear, long the valuation
[Bridge] Moreover, the market is reflecting Underscore the landscape of the pivotal 75 billion, 84 billion, 965 Every IPO says: the machine is alive Who holds the brake when everyone Is selling you the car
[Verse 3] Monday morning opens and the techies tweet "This technology is powerful, it's neat Also it might destroy civilization Buy the dip, that's my recommendation" 80 percent of their code now Claude-written The engineer who's merging eight times a day Brake pedal on the blog, accelerator at close of play
[Chorus] Brake pedal, accelerator Brake pedal, accelerator You own the upside of the race And the upside of the slowdown Brake pedal, accelerator Long the fear, long the valuation
[Outro] The safety case and the valuation case Now rhyme There's more IPOs than market cap to find Apple on the stage, the crowd applauds It's Monday, June the eighth Brake pedal, accelerator, brake
