Episode Overview

1. Ebola PHEIC — DRC & Uganda: WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17 for a Bundibugyo virus outbreak in Ituri Province, DRC — 246 suspected cases, 80 suspected deaths. Two confirmed cases have crossed into Uganda's capital, Kampala. No approved vaccine or treatment exists for this Ebola species.
2. Hantavirus Cruise Ship Update: The M/V Hondius cluster has grown to 10 cases (8 confirmed Andes virus), with 3 deaths. Passengers from 23 countries were aboard. CDC issued updated testing guidance on May 18 for clinicians who may see exposed travelers.
3. Mpox Recombinant Strain: A novel recombinant mpox virus combining clade Ib and clade IIb elements has been detected in travelers from Southeast Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. No severe outcomes, no secondary cases — but it signals viral evolution in an era of multi-lineage co-circulation.
4. H5N1 Update: 71 total US human cases since February 2024, all linked to animal exposure. No sustained human-to-human transmission detected globally.
