๐คฒ ASL Sign of the Day: FAMILY
Both hands form an "F" shape โ index and thumb pinched into a circle, three fingers fanned upward. They start at chest height facing each other, then sweep outward in a wide arc until the pinky sides meet, palms facing out.
The circle your hands trace is the meaning: everyone together in one shared space.
Card 1 โ Starting Handshape
Both "F" hands at chest height, palms facing each other. Index finger and thumb pinched together forming a circle. Middle, ring, and pinky fingers spread upward. Hands roughly shoulder-width apart, fingertips angled slightly forward.
Card 2 โ Motion
Both hands sweep outward simultaneously in a wide semicircular arc โ away from center, looping around, ending with pinky sides nearly meeting. Keep the arc smooth and deliberate; a rushed or tight arc looks like a different sign.
Card 3 โ Ending Handshape
Both "F" hands with pinky sides touching or side-by-side, palms now facing forward/outward at chest height. The "circle" is complete.
Card 4 โ Usage
"My family is very important to me."
Use whenever talking about relatives, household, or the people closest to you.
May family theme: you've now covered MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER, SISTER, GRANDMOTHER, GRANDFATHER, SON, DAUGHTER, BABY, and FAMILY โ a complete starter set for family conversations in ASL.
Practice tip: pair FAMILY with MY (dominant hand flat-B touches chest) for the full phrase MY FAMILY.
