Rodrigues wins a Sacramento war, Lopez takes the WBA: Aug. 17–23 recap and Aug. 24–30 preview

Aug. 17–23 produced a new WBA welterweight champion, a 50-win milestone and a UFC middleweight contender with a much bigger name on his callout list. Gregory Rodrigues outlasted Anthony Hernandez in Sacramento; Teofimo Lopez dethroned Rolando Romero in Las Vegas; Amanda Serrano reached 50 wins while keeping three featherweight titles; and George Liddard added the European middleweight belt to his British and Commonwealth titles.

The next seven days are built around two heavyweight title stories. UFC Shanghai brings ranked bantamweights Umar Nurmagomedov and Song Yadong together early Saturday morning in the Eastern time zone. Later that day, Moses Itauma and Filip Hrgovic fight for the vacant IBF heavyweight title in London. Lester Martinez also makes his first defense of the WBC interim super middleweight title in Los Angeles.

UFC Fight Night: Hernandez vs. Rodrigues took place Aug. 22 at Golden 1 Center. The official event page lists all 13 results; ESPN’s fight center provides the post-fight records below. 12

Rodrigues had the clearest answer to Hernandez’s pace: he attacked the legs, landed the heavier power shots and stayed composed when Hernandez rallied in the third round. The judges’ cards were close enough to reflect the five-round fight, but two cards gave Rodrigues four rounds. The result puts him in position for a ranked opponent, while Hernandez’s 15-4 record leaves him needing a second win to regain momentum. 34

The bonus list was unusually easy to read: Rodrigues and Hernandez shared Fight of the Night, while Mederos and Judice received Performance of the Night. Each fighter received $100,000. 4

The undercard produced six stoppages and one decision. Jamall Emmers stopped Lerryan Douglas by punches at 3:38 of Round 1; Shamil Gaziev stopped Kennedy Nzechukwu at 1:20 of Round 1; Chris Padilla submitted Nasrat Haqparast at 4:59 of Round 3; Marcio Barbosa stopped Ryan Kuse at 2:47 of Round 1; Stan Dorsainvil beat Gauge Young by unanimous decision; Jackson McVey stopped Wes Schultz at 4:13 of Round 1; and Shanelle Dyer stopped Elise Reed at 1:42 of Round 3. 12

Teofimo Lopez outboxed Rolando Romero by majority decision at T-Mobile Arena on Aug. 22, winning the WBA welterweight title and becoming a three-division world champion. The official scores were 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112. Lopez moved to 23-2 with 13 knockouts; Romero fell to 17-3 with 13 knockouts. 5

Lopez controlled the fight with his jab and body work, but Romero had the most damaging sequence in Round 5. A left hook opened a cut over Lopez’s right eye, and a follow-up right hand briefly rocked him. Lopez resumed control in the second half, which made the decision difficult to dispute even though one judge scored the bout level. The next obvious question is whether the WBA orders Lopez to face secondary champion Jack Catterall.

The card also produced a WBA interim super bantamweight champion: Gary Antonio Russell beat Victor Santillan by unanimous decision, 118-109 and 119-108 twice. Russell moved to 22-1; Santillan fell to 16-3. 6

Amanda Serrano kept her WBA, WBO and The Ring featherweight titles by taking a majority decision over Lucrecia Manzur on Aug. 21 at Pechanga Resort Casino. The judges scored it 114-114, 116-112 and 116-112. Serrano reached 50 wins, while Manzur’s forward pressure and body work made the champion fight through 12 hard rounds. 7

Serrano did not get the knockout that would have moved her past the women’s record she was chasing, but the night still delivered another title change. Melissa Mortensen recovered from a second-round knockdown to beat Mayelli Flores by split decision, 95-94 twice and 94-95, for the vacant WBA super bantamweight title. Jahmal Harvey also stopped Hammet Keb with a right hand at 2:48 of Round 2. The event was the first championship boxing card carried on TikTok LIVE, giving the result a distribution story as well as a sporting one. 7

George Liddard stopped Dario Morello after eight rounds at the Copper Box Arena on Aug. 22 to win the vacant European middleweight title. Morello’s corner retired him after Liddard dropped him late in the eighth. Liddard moved to 15-0 with nine knockouts; Morello fell to 26-2 with four knockouts. 8

Liddard has now collected the British, Commonwealth and European belts in less than ten months. His next decision is whether to defend the European title or move immediately toward a world-level fight. The same card saw Jimmy Sains beat Tom Cowling for the Commonwealth middleweight title and Tiah Mai Ayton stop Ellie Hellewell for the vacant Commonwealth featherweight belt. 8

Olympic champion Oleksandr Khyzhniak beat Durval Palacio by unanimous decision on Aug. 22 in Lviv, Ukraine, taking the WBA Gold light heavyweight title. The scores were 98-92, 99-91 and 100-90. Khyzhniak improved to 3-0 with two knockouts; Palacio fell to 16-5 with 12 knockouts. 9

The cleanest Saturday split is between two kinds of heavyweight test. Itauma–Hrgovic is a vacant world-title fight between a fast-rising 21-year-old and a more experienced contender who has been waiting for this opportunity. Martinez–Plantic is a defense rather than a coronation, but the undefeated mandatory challenger gives the WBC interim belt a real competitive test. Before either boxing card, UFC Shanghai asks whether Nurmagomedov can convert his ranking advantage into a decisive win over Song.
