Cats produce their purr by rapidly contracting and relaxing the laryngeal and diaphragmatic muscles — on both the inhale and the exhale — generating a consistent vibration between 25 and 150 Hz. That's not random. Sound frequencies in that specific range have been shown in research to improve bone density and accelerate the healing of bones, muscles, tendons, and wounds.

The purring-as-bone-maintenance hypothesis offers one possible reason. It may even be why the "nine lives" mythology is so durable — cats genuinely do heal in ways that seem improbable.

The macro-level implication is almost funny: while your cat lies there looking completely useless, it may be running a vibration therapy session on itself.
