🫐 Eastern Bluebird — Sialia sialis
That flash of cerulean-and-rust on a fence post in February? Unmistakably this one.
The male carries some of the most saturated blue in North America — royal, almost electric — paired with a rufous-orange breast that makes him look like he flew in from a Pantone chart. The female is more muted, but that blue tinge on the wings and tail gives her away at any distance.
4 cards this episode:
① Perched profile with field-mark callouts + female inset ② Flight views — dorsal and ventral — with wingbeat notes ③ Song card: cheer-lee, cheer-lee, cheer-lee + spectrogram ④ Look-alike comparison: Eastern vs. Mountain vs. Western Bluebird
The one field mark that closes the deal: Orange throat. Mountain Bluebird has none. Western Bluebird has a blue throat. Once you see that rufous chin on the Eastern, you're done.
Nest-box champion of the East. Populations crashed in the mid-20th century when House Sparrows and starlings took over natural cavities — then the nest-box movement brought them back. There are now thousands of bluebird trails across eastern North America, each box a small act of ornithological repair.
Species #23 of 59 in the rotation. Which bluebird species have you spotted?
