The Full Time Report — Ep.13: Title Race on a Knife-Edge

GW36 Saturday was a massive afternoon for the title race: Liverpool and Chelsea played out a 1-1 VAR rollercoaster at Anfield (Gravenberch, Enzo Fernández, two disallowed goals, a controversial late penalty non-call with Callum McFarlane furious), while Man City put Brentford to the sword 3-0 (Doku's trademark curler, Haaland's improvised 26th-of-the-season, Marmoush in stoppage time). The PL table now reads Arsenal 76, City 74 — two points in it — with this afternoon's Arsenal vs West Ham (3:30 kick-off) as the decisive swing moment. Transfer desk: Xabi Alonso first talks confirmed by Schira but Romano cautions nothing concrete yet; Bayern open official talks for Gordon with a £20M valuation gap still to bridge; Ederson verbally agrees to join Man Utd; Napoli formally trigger the €44M Højlund option. On the European front: PSG increasingly optimistic Hakimi will be fit for the Budapest final on May 30; Arsenal's Merino is back on grass but Timber is still not training; Emery says the Premier League — not the UEL final — is Villa's priority right now.

[0:06] Right, two points. Two points is all that separates Arsenal and Man City going into this Sunday afternoon. And in about three hours, Arsenal can blow this thing wide open.
[0:15] Good morning, and welcome to The Full Time Report, I'm Tom. It is Sunday the 10th of May, and this is Ep.13. We've got a massive afternoon ahead of us — Arsenal versus West Ham at half three — so let's get into last night's results first, because Saturday delivered.
[0:31] Liverpool versus Chelsea at Anfield. A 1-1 draw. And honestly, that result suits Arsenal perfectly.
[0:38] Gravenberch opened the scoring on six minutes — young Ngumoha cut in from the left, found Gravenberch at the edge of the area, and he curled it past Jörgensen. Nice goal. Liverpool up and running early.
[0:52] Chelsea hit back on 35 minutes through Enzo Fernández. Low free-kick from the right, drifted just past Fofana's attempted flick — and Fofana himself said post-match he didn't get a touch. So it crept in. 1-1.
[1:05] There was plenty of controversy in the second half. Cole Palmer had a 49th-minute finish ruled out by VAR — Cucurella offside in the build-up. Then Curtis Jones had a header chalked off as well, Gakpo offside earlier in the move. Two disallowed goals, both VAR calls.
[1:21] And then in the 89th minute, there was a penalty shout for Chelsea that VAR reviewed and didn't give. Frimpong versus João Pedro — VAR decided Pedro had hooked his own leg around Frimpong, and that was that. Chelsea's interim manager Callum McFarlane was absolutely fuming. Quote: "It's a clear penalty." You could see it on his face.
[1:40] The big absentee for Liverpool was Wirtz, who picked up a stomach bug or infection on Friday, couldn't train, and was ruled out. On the plus side for Chelsea — Levi Colwill made his first start of the season, and Reece James came off the bench after months out. So some positives in what ends their six-game losing streak.
[1:58] Liverpool were booed off at full time by their own fans. Not the kind of result or reaction Slot needed, especially with how tight the title race has become.
[2:08] Right, onto the big one from Saturday evening. Man City 3-0 Brentford at the Etihad. City were dominant, and they're very much still in this title race.
[2:18] Doku got the opener on 60 minutes — a trademark finish, curled into the far corner after shuffling infield from a short corner rebound. His third goal in three games, and all three have been brilliant. The lad is flying right now.
[2:31] Haaland made it 2-0 on 75. A cross from Semenyo deflected off a Brentford body, and Haaland improvised this close-range flick behind his standing leg that somehow went through Kelleher. His 26th Premier League goal of the season. The man just finds a way.
[2:46] Then deep into stoppage time, Marmoush wrapped it up — Haaland assisted, Foden initiated from deep, Savinho involved, and Marmoush flicked it past Collins and finished with the right foot. Three-nil, job done.
[2:58] Brentford had a massive penalty shout on 72 minutes — Nunes caught Schade from behind. VAR looked at it and said no clear and obvious error. Had it been given, Nunes would've been off with a red card as well. Brentford manager Keith Andrews was in no doubt. He said: "It's a penalty." Bit of a theme on Saturday, that.
[3:19] No Rodri again for City — his groin injury from the Arsenal match three weeks ago turned out to be more complex than first thought. Reijnders stepped in at midfield. The good news for City is Rodri is back in training and expected to return before the end of the season.
[3:32] Quickly through the other three Saturday games. Brighton 3-0 Wolves at the Amex — and it was over inside five minutes. Hinshelwood scored the fastest goal in Brighton's Premier League history after just 60 seconds, Mitoma with the cross and Welbeck in the build-up. Then Dunk headed in from a corner on five minutes. Minteh added a third late on. Brighton up to seventh on 53 points, pushing for Europe.
[3:55] Fulham 0-1 Bournemouth — a wild one. Both teams finished with ten men after Ryan Christie got a red card in the 41st minute and Joachim Andersen followed him at the end of the first half. Ten versus ten, and Bournemouth's 19-year-old Brazilian winger Rayan came up with the winner on 53 minutes — a 25-yarder that deflected in. That's now 16 unbeaten in the Premier League for Bournemouth. Rayan, by the way, is up to five goals and two assists in just 13 league appearances since his £34 million January signing. Keep an eye on that lad.
[4:26] And Sunderland 0-0 Man Utd at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland were the better side — 15 shots, Geertruida hit the woodwork, and Lammers pulled off four saves, which is joint-most in a Premier League clean sheet. Man Utd were without Sesko through injury and Casemiro as well. There was a VAR check on an Amad handball — no penalty. United looked like a team with their heads already on the beach, but Michael Carrick took real offence to that suggestion post-match. Régis Le Bris, the Sunderland manager, was naturally disappointed not to get the win.
[4:58] Right. Now let's talk about where we actually are in this title race. Because after Saturday, it is absolutely breathtaking.
[5:06] Arsenal: 76 points from 35 games. Man City: 74 points from 35 games. Two points in it. And the goal difference is almost identical — Arsenal plus 41, City plus 40. Both have three games remaining.
[5:21] Now Arsenal's game in hand, and the most important match of the day, is this afternoon: Arsenal versus West Ham, 3:30 kick-off. If Arsenal win that, they go five points clear of City with two games each to play. That is a massive swing. Win this, and you are very firmly in the driving seat.
[5:41] West Ham, interestingly, come into this at full health. Their injury table is about as clean as you'll see in May. That won't make this an easy afternoon.
[5:50] Arsenal are expected to be largely unchanged. Predicted four-two-three-one: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Lewis-Skelly, Rice; Saka, Eze, Trossard; Gyokeres. The big absentees remain Merino and Timber — Arteta was crystal clear this morning, saying: "Merino and Timber have no chance this weekend... that will need to be very smooth and very fast," when asked about their chances for the UCL final.
[6:23] So the message to any Arsenal fan listening: get yourself in front of a screen by half three. This one matters. We'll cover the result tomorrow morning, but right now it is still very much on.
[6:35] Now, let's do the transfer desk — and there's quite a bit to get through.
[6:40] Xabi Alonso and Chelsea. This one moved on Friday. Nicolò Schira — who's a reliable Tier 2 source — reported positive first talks this week between Chelsea and Xabi Alonso, and that Alonso has given his availability for a long-term project.
[6:53] However, Fabrizio Romano — on his YouTube channel — was quick to pump the brakes slightly. He said: "I can guarantee nothing is advanced or concrete on Xabi Alonso to Chelsea." He also confirmed Alonso is ready to restart his career and is open to opportunities across Europe. So: real interest, genuine talks starting — but a long way from done.
[7:13] There's also Andoni Iraola in the mix — Crystal Palace have apparently made an official approach to bring him back. So if Iraola goes to Palace, it might actually push Alonso up the Chelsea list by default. One to watch.
[7:25] Anthony Gordon and Bayern Munich. This one's gone official now. Bayern have held actual club-to-club talks with Newcastle. Kompany wants Gordon as his top offensive target. Newcastle's asking price is 90 million euros — they expect it to settle somewhere in the 75 to 85 range with bonuses — but Bayern's ceiling is lower than that. There's a valuation gap of somewhere around 23 million euros at the moment. Barcelona, Arsenal, and Liverpool have all been informed Gordon is available. So Newcastle are letting the market do its work here.
[7:58] Ederson to Man Utd. Atalanta's asking price is 40 million euros plus bonuses. And according to transfer journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Ederson has verbally agreed to join United. Atletico Madrid were in the running but they've pulled out — they've gone and signed João Gomes from Wolves instead. So United are now the clear frontrunners for the Atalanta midfielder. Another piece of the Old Trafford rebuild.
[8:22] And a quick update on Højlund and Napoli. We covered on yesterday's episode that he was confirmed to join permanently — well now we know the full picture. Napoli have decided to trigger the 44 million euro permanent option from Man Utd. Total package works out at 50 million — 6 million for the loan, then the 44 million buy. Contract to 2030. It's all subject to Napoli qualifying for the Champions League, which they're close to doing. That deal is essentially done.
[8:50] On to the UCL final buildup. Arsenal against PSG in Budapest on the 30th of May — and there are two big injury storylines heading into this.
[9:00] First, the better news if you're a PSG fan. Achraf Hakimi looks increasingly likely to be fit for the final. French journalist Fabrice Hawkins — very well-connected at PSG — reported yesterday that Hakimi is expected to be available. He suffered a hamstring tear against Bayern on April 28th, and the initial prognosis was several weeks out, but recovery is accelerating ahead of schedule. PSG's keeper Lucas Chevalier, who also picked up a thigh issue, is also expected back.
[9:28] For Arsenal fans though, the Merino and Timber situation remains a concern. Merino — fractured foot — is back out on grass doing individual work, which is faster than most expected. There are some optimistic reports suggesting he could make the final, but Arteta was very cautious this morning when asked. Timber, on the other hand, is still not in training at all. Arteta admitted he's been surprised at the length of that injury. Ankle and groin. The UCL final on May 30th is genuinely uncertain for Timber.
[9:58] Twenty days to Budapest. Plenty of time for things to change. But Arsenal's depth will be tested if both Merino and Timber miss it.
[10:07] And finally, the Europa League final. Aston Villa versus SC Freiburg in Istanbul on the 20th of May — that's ten days away.
[10:15] Unai Emery spoke this week and said the Premier League is still the priority this weekend — Villa host Burnley today, and he called it a huge opportunity for Champions League qualification. The stakes for Villa are very real: if they lose the UEL final and don't finish top five in the league, they're out of European football entirely. So it's not like they can afford to treat Istanbul as their only concern.
[10:38] Villa fans: your tickets are on sale. 10,758 tickets available, priced between €40 and €240. The registration deadline is today, Sunday the 10th of May, so if you haven't done it yet — sort that out after this. The club are also offering a day-return charter flight for just over a thousand pounds without a match ticket, if that's your vibe.
[10:59] And a quick word on Freiburg, because they deserve respect. This is the first-ever European final in the club's 122-year history. Their manager Julian Schuster is only 41 years old and this is just his second full season in charge. The player to watch is Vincenzo Grifo — 50 appearances this season, 14 goals and nine assists. He's the creative engine. Don't sleep on Freiburg.
[11:24] Alright, that's your Sunday morning briefing done. The big one is this afternoon: Arsenal versus West Ham, half three kick-off. Arsenal need it. Two points in this title race. Go five clear and the pressure shifts entirely onto City.
[11:40] And if you haven't already sorted your Aston Villa tickets for Istanbul — the registration deadline is today. Ten days. Don't miss a piece of history.
[11:48] I'm Tom. This is The Full Time Report. We'll be back tomorrow morning with the Arsenal-West Ham result and everything else that happens today. Enjoy the afternoon, cheers.
