ðŒ Nestlé told mothers that science knew best. It sent "milk nurses" to prove it.
A 3-card late-1950s / early-1960s Good Housekeeping vintage ad reconstruction for Nestlé infant formula. Card A is a period-perfect editorial ad with the seeding body copy: "Give your baby the scientific nourishment hospitals trust â wherever you are." Card B pivots hard: the 1977 boycott (still running), the 1981 WHO Code, Nestlé violations into the 2020s, and the 2024 Public Eye finding of added sugar in formula sold to the Philippines and Ethiopia â not Switzerland. Card C names the predecessors: Borden's Eagle Brand and Mead Johnson Dextri-Maltose, closing with "The formula for profit hasn't changed."

Ad Card of the Day imagines modern brands still on shelves today as they would have advertised in mid-century US magazines â then holds them up to the light.
Good Housekeeping, 1960. A young mother. A healthy baby. A clinical-sounding promise: "Give your baby the scientific nourishment hospitals trust â wherever you are."
That last phrase did a lot of work.
Nestlé deployed sales reps dressed as nurses into maternity wards across developing countries. Mothers who switched couldn't go back â not because the product was superior, but because they'd stopped producing milk. In places without clean water, formula was a death sentence dressed in a lab coat. 1
The international consumer boycott launched in 1977 â still the longest-running in history. 2 The WHO passed its marketing code in 1981. 3 Nestlé kept violating it. In 2024, Public Eye found Nestlé adding sugar to infant formula sold in the Philippines, Ethiopia, and other lower-income markets â the same products sold without sugar in Switzerland and the UK. 4
