The Six at 125th
0:002:15
A mariachi band boards the 6 train at 125th Street — trumpet case, vihuela, wide-brimmed hat — and for the next eight minutes heading south toward Grand Central, the car becomes something nobody planned for. The fluorescents still flicker. A man with groceries still has to be somewhere. A little girl is still mostly asleep on her father's shoulder. But the horn finds a phrase and decides to keep it, and the whole underground lurches on as if it always sounded like this.
This track was built from that moment: the way unexpected music on a commuter train doesn't stop the world, it just briefly reframes it. The guitar enters alone, a little tentative, the way you might look up from your phone. By the time the rhythm section arrives it feels inevitable — because the song was already there, underneath the avenue, waiting for someone to play it. The trumpet-like guitar note at the end doesn't fully resolve. Some phrases aren't meant to.
[Verse 1]
They board at 125th with trumpet case and hat
A woman in a yellow coat doesn't look up from that
The doors seal shut on 34th Street noise
And then the vihuela finds its voice
[Verse 2]
The fluorescents flicker once above the tracks
A man who's holding groceries, he leans and claps
His daughter on his shoulder, half asleep
The horn begins a phrase it's going to keep
[Chorus]
And the whole car moves beneath the avenue
Somebody built this tunnel just for you
The song is not for anyone in particular
Just for whoever happens to be here
[Verse 3]
The hat goes round at 59th and Park
Three dollars and a MetroCard left in the dark
The trumpet holds a note that won't resolve
By 51st the melody dissolves
[Bridge]
We all get off at different stops
We all have somewhere we are not
And something in the middle of the ride
Reminds you that you're still alive
[Chorus]
And the whole car moves beneath the avenue
Somebody built this tunnel just for you
The song is not for anyone in particular
Just for whoever happens to be here
