Summary

Kobbie Mainoo's 77th-minute winner sends Manchester United into next season's Champions League, Spurs climb out of the relegation zone, and Bournemouth stay very much in the European hunt — but the headline belongs to Bruno Fernandes, whose 20th official assist of the season equals the all-time Premier League record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Tom also runs through the transfer desk (Chelsea manager search, Salah stalemate, Gordon/Bayern, Curtis Jones/Inter, Tonali standoff), Arsenal's injury boost ahead of Tuesday night's UCL semi-final second leg at the Emirates, and tonight's Man City vs Everton title showdown.

Full Transcript

[0:06] Twenty. That's the magic number. Bruno Fernandes has equalled the all-time Premier League single-season assist record — and he did it at Old Trafford, against Liverpool, in a three-two win that's also just booked Manchester United a seat at the Champions League table.
[0:20] What a Sunday. Welcome to The Full Time Report — I'm Tom, it's Monday the fourth of May, and we have got a lot to get through today.
[0:29] We'll start with the big one — Man United three, Liverpool two — then work through Spurs at Villa and Bournemouth's demolition of Palace. We've got the transfer desk, the injury board, and a big look ahead to tonight's Man City versus Everton in the title race. Plus, Arsenal's latest injury update with the Champions League semi-final second leg forty-eight hours away.
[0:49] Right. Let's go.

Man Utd 3–2 Liverpool

[0:51] Manchester United three, Liverpool two. Old Trafford, Sunday afternoon. If you haven't watched the highlights yet, do yourself a favour and go watch them — because this was a proper football match.
[1:03] United flew out of the blocks. Matheus Cunha put them ahead inside six minutes — a predatory finish, the kind of goal you'd expect from a striker in form. And then Benjamin Sesko, fourteen minutes in, makes it two-nil. Old Trafford is rocking.
[1:16] Now — Sesko's goal. This is where the record comes in. Bruno Fernandes headed the ball across goal, Sesko bundled it in. The crowd go absolutely wild, gesturing the number twenty. Twenty assists. The Henry record. The De Bruyne record. Equal.
[1:33] Except — here's where it gets messy. Liverpool's third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman got a touch on Bruno's header before Sesko converted. And because Opta judged that the ball was not travelling goalward without that touch, they did not award Bruno an official assist.
[1:48] FPL gave him the points. But officially? He stays on nineteen for that one. It's a technicality that I guarantee is going to drive football Twitter absolutely mad for the rest of this week.
[1:59] Now — before I bury the lede completely — Bruno did get to twenty. CBS Sports and multiple sources confirm it. He registered his twentieth official assist of the season at some point during this match. So Thierry Henry. Kevin De Bruyne. Bruno Fernandes. One season. Twenty assists. He is in that company.
[2:17] And crucially — he still has three league games left. Three games to potentially become the sole record holder. Absolute scenes.
[2:25] Back to the match. Liverpool weren't done. Szoboszlai pulled one back, then Cody Gakpo made it two-two. Suddenly it's a completely different atmosphere at Old Trafford. Liverpool had been two-nil down and now they're level.
[2:41] And then — seventy-seven minutes. Kobbie Mainoo. The young midfielder, already club legend in the making, arrives in the box and finishes it. Three-two. Game over. Champions League booked.
[2:52] Manchester United have secured Champions League football for next season. With three games still to play. That is Michael Carrick's achievement — ten wins from fourteen games in charge since taking over in January. And he was brilliant about it afterwards.
[3:06] Carrick said: 「I love doing what I'm doing. It's a great position for me to be in and it feels pretty natural if I'm totally honest.」 And that last bit — pretty natural — that tells you everything about where his headspace is.
[3:18] It's also worth noting — this is the first time United have done the league double over Liverpool since the 2015-16 season. That is a long time coming.
[3:27] On the Liverpool side — Arne Slot was fuming post-match. And honestly? You can see why he's frustrated. He pointed to a season-long pattern with VAR decisions. He said: 「If there is something that you could look at or could be left, could be right — that decision goes against us. That has been the whole season. Every single time.」
[3:47] There was controversy around Sesko's second goal too — a potential handball in the build-up. VAR checked it and let it stand. Former referee Dermot Gallagher called it marginal. It's the kind of decision that could genuinely go either way.
[4:00] But Slot also acknowledged this — and credit to him for saying it: 「There's also a pattern that we concede ridiculous goals when we are the better team and one or two are switching off. That we have more influence on.」 That's self-awareness. That's a manager being honest.
[4:15] Worth noting Liverpool were already without both first and second-choice keepers — Alisson out for his eighth consecutive match, Mamardashvili also unavailable. Third-choice Woodman started. Alexander Isak didn't feature either due to a minor groin problem. So Liverpool went to Old Trafford seriously undermanned.
[4:33] Practically, the title race implications — Liverpool's realistic chances of catching Arsenal now look very slim. Arsenal are six points clear with a much better goal difference. We'll come back to the title picture when we get to tonight's game.

GW35 Other Results

[4:46] Two other Sunday results — quick fire. Aston Villa one, Tottenham two. And Bournemouth three, Crystal Palace nil.
[4:55] Spurs at Villa Park. Conor Gallagher twelve minutes. Richarlison twenty-five. And Villa had no answer in the first half — De Zerbi's side looked compact, disciplined, and genuinely dangerous on the counter.
[5:08] Emiliano Buendia pulled one back in the ninety-sixth minute for Villa, but it was too little, too late. Spurs hold on. Two-one.
[5:16] This is a massive result for Tottenham's survival. They moved one point above the relegation zone. De Zerbi — who inherited this mess just weeks ago — is doing something genuinely impressive. Conor Gallagher said afterwards: 「I can't speak highly enough of De Zerbi. He's been so good. Every player has taken to him.」
[5:35] De Zerbi was measured, as always. 「It's not finished yet. We have three very tough games left, starting Monday night with Leeds.」 No complacency there. Monday night being tonight, actually — so there's another relegation six-pointer going on in the background.
[5:50] For Villa — Unai Emery was gracious: 「Tottenham played a very good match.」 But he also put it in perspective: 「It's a different match, a different competition. To play in the semi-final of the Europa League is fantastic.」 Villa are still in the UEL semi-final, second leg at Villa Park on Thursday — down one-nil to Nottingham Forest. That's their season right there.
[6:11] Bournemouth three, Crystal Palace nil — clinical. Jefferson Lerma own goal, Junior Kroupi penalty, Rayan completing the rout. Bournemouth into sixth place, unbeaten run continues.
[6:25] Andoni Iraola — who we should mention is leaving Bournemouth this summer — was brilliant about it: 「We want European football. Champions League would be a bonus, but our focus is just to finish as high as we can.」 Sixth place with three games left. That could be Europa League football at the Vitality next season. Not bad.
[6:42] Palace offered almost nothing. Oliver Glasner admitted: 「The tank was empty. Against a team that presses like Bournemouth, to play square passes around their box doesn't make sense — but that is what we did.」 Honest.

Transfer Desk

[6:54] Transfer desk. Let's do this quickly because there's a lot of plates spinning right now.
[6:59] Chelsea manager — still unresolved. The shortlist is now officially Xabi Alonso, Andoni Iraola, and Cesc Fabregas. Alonso would be the headline appointment, but he wants genuine control over transfers — and given how Chelsea operate, that could be the sticking point. Iraola's available this summer when he leaves Bournemouth. Fabregas is the wildcard.
[7:21] Marco Silva — previously linked — dismissed it completely. Said: 「I don't pay any attention.」 So you can probably take him off the board.
[7:29] Mohamed Salah — no update. Fenerbahce are still the frontrunners, but talks remain frozen. Nothing has moved in the last forty-eight hours. This one is going to go right to the wire and it may not resolve until the summer window formally opens.
[7:43] Anthony Gordon and Bayern Munich. Bayern have made direct contact with Gordon and his camp — personal terms discussions, a contract offer worth around fifteen million euros a year until 2031, with an option. Newcastle don't want to sell but could be moved at around a hundred million euros. No formal club-to-club negotiations yet, but the player-side contact has begun. One to watch.
[8:09] Curtis Jones — Inter Milan are back. They want a loan with a forty-million-euro purchase option. Jones has one year left on his contract at Liverpool. Liverpool blocked a similar move in January. Inter have just won Serie A under Cristian Chivu — they're in a strong financial position, so expect this one to run all summer.
[8:28] Sandro Tonali — Newcastle holding firm at one hundred million pounds plus. Tonali has publicly said a return to Serie A is absolutely impossible, his words, confirmed by Fabrizio Romano. Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City are all monitoring. The key variable is whether Newcastle qualify for the Champions League — which now looks likely given they're comfortably mid-table after that Brighton win on Saturday.
[8:53] Quick mention — Eddie Howe staying at Newcastle. David Ornstein confirmed it Sunday morning. Both club and manager committed, despite a difficult season. All parties accept this campaign cannot be repeated — but the project continues.
[9:07] And John Stones — leaving Manchester City this summer. Free agent. Contract ending. Ornstein had that one wrapped up weeks ago. A ten-year stint at City drawing to a close. He'll have no shortage of suitors from across Europe.

Arsenal Injury Update

[9:21] Arsenal injury news — and this is big ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid.
[9:29] The good news first. Mikel Arteta says he expects both Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz to be available on Tuesday. His exact words: 「I think so, the both of them. We will do everything to prepare them for this game.」 That is huge. Odegaard is Arsenal's creative engine and Havertz has been exceptional through the Champions League campaign.
[9:48] Odegaard irritated his knee in the first leg in Madrid and came off. Havertz picked up a groin problem a couple of weeks ago against Newcastle and hasn't played since. Both are in a race against time — but Arteta sounds cautiously confident.
[10:01] The not-so-good news: Jurrien Timber is still out. Groin and pelvic issue, been out over a month, return timeline uncertain. And Mikel Merino is done for the season — the ankle injury he picked up will keep him out until late May. Those two won't be part of whatever Arsenal put on the pitch on Tuesday.
[10:19] Here's the stat that should give Arsenal fans real confidence though. Arsenal have conceded just six goals across the entire Champions League campaign this season. Six. That's the lowest of all four semi-finalists. Atletico have let in twenty-seven. That is an absolutely staggering gap.
[10:36] The tie is level at one-one from the first leg in Madrid — Arsenal had a penalty overturned by VAR, Arteta was furious. Now they're at the Emirates in front of sixty thousand people who remember that. The atmosphere is going to be something else.
[10:51] One more thing worth flagging — Arsenal's recent form heading into Tuesday: three-nil against Fulham on Saturday with Viktor Gyokeres grabbing two and Saka heavily involved. Momentum is with them. Atletico beat Valencia two-nil in La Liga on Friday but that is a very different level of opposition.
[11:08] Arsenal vs Atletico. Tuesday night. Emirates Stadium. Eight o'clock. Make sure you're watching.

Tonight: Man City vs Everton

[11:15] Now let's talk about tonight. Man City versus Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Goodison replacement — that's a GW35 fixture, seven o'clock kickoff.
[11:27] The title race situation going in: Arsenal on seventy-six points from thirty-five games. Man City on seventy points from thirty-four games — two games in hand. Win tonight and City close the gap to three points with two games each still to play. It is absolutely on.
[11:43] City's injury situation isn't ideal though. Ruben Dias is out with a thigh problem. Josko Gvardiol out with a calf injury. Rodri — the man who basically dictates how City play — is questionable with a groin issue. That is a significant chunk of their defensive and midfield spine potentially missing.
[12:00] On the Everton side, Beto returns from concussion — and they'll have Jack Grealish missing, by the way, with a foot problem.
[12:08] City still have Erling Haaland. They still have Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Jeremy Doku. The quality is there. But Arsenal will be watching very carefully from wherever they are tonight.
[12:19] If City win, it's a three-point gap. Arsenal then play their own game this week — Tuesday night at the Emirates, yes, but that's the Champions League. They've still got Premier League games coming. The title race is genuinely alive. Don't let anyone tell you it's done.

European Previews

[12:34] Quick look at the bigger European picture. PSG versus Bayern Munich — Champions League semi-final second leg — Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena. PSG lead five-four on aggregate from that extraordinary first leg. Bayern need to score twice and not concede. Good luck with that.
[12:51] Bayern drew three-three at home to Heidenheim at the weekend. Not exactly a confidence booster. PSG drew two-two at Lorient. Neither team setting the world on fire domestically, but when the Champions League comes around, all bets are off.
[13:06] In the Europa League — two second legs on Thursday. Aston Villa hosting Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, Forest lead one-nil from the first leg thanks to Chris Wood's penalty. And SC Freiburg against Braga — Braga lead two-one. Both ties very much alive. Both potential final spots for English and European football at large.
[13:24] Nottingham Forest's manager Vitor Pereira said after that first leg: 「It's an honour to manage these players. This team has gone through four different managers this season and still reached this stage — that means something.」 Remarkable run for Forest.
[13:39] Hudson-Odoi is out for Forest — surgery, season done. Chris Wood managing his knee long-term. But if he's fit enough to play Thursday, Villa Park is going to be electric.

Injury Board

[13:50] Brief injury board before we wrap. Starting with Liverpool — and this puts Sunday's result in context. Alisson Becker: eight consecutive matches out, hamstring. Mamardashvili: also out. Alexander Isak: groin problem kept him out Sunday. Arne Slot is targeting all three for the Chelsea fixture on May the ninth, but none of them are guaranteed.
[14:11] Arsenal: Odegaard and Havertz targeting Tuesday, Timber targeting around the tenth of May, Merino out until late May. Eberechi Eze — listed by the Premier League as a knock, though that's thought to be fairly minor.
[14:25] Man City: Gvardiol and Dias both out tonight — targeting returns around mid to late May. Rodri's groin monitoring ongoing.
[14:34] Man United: Lisandro Martinez serving a suspension, back around the ninth. Matthijs de Ligt out — targeting seventeenth of May.
[14:41] Newcastle: Tonali himself is listed with a groin and hip issue which is a bit ironic given the ongoing transfer speculation. Sven Botman, Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar — all missing for varying durations.
[14:57] Right — that is your injury board. The full picture will be clearer as the week goes on, but that's where the major clubs stand going into a huge midweek.

Wrap Up

[15:06] Alright — let's land the plane. The one thing you need to take away from Sunday? Bruno Fernandes is twenty assists into a Premier League season. Joint record. Twenty. He has three games left. That is the stat of this entire season and we are watching it happen in real time.
[15:20] Manchester United are in the Champions League next season under Michael Carrick, who is already sounding like a man who knows this job is his if he wants it. Spurs are out of the bottom three. Bournemouth are sixth. The Premier League is extraordinary right now.
[15:34] Tonight: Man City vs Everton — Arsenal fans will be watching. Wednesday: Bayern vs PSG — the best remaining tie in Europe. Tuesday: Arsenal vs Atletico at the Emirates — that's the one I'm most excited about.
[15:48] Episode nine drops tomorrow morning covering all of that. Until then — I'm Tom, thanks so much for listening to The Full Time Report. Enjoy the football tonight. We'll see you on the other side.
