This spider flies without wings.

A spider can throw out silk, test the wind, and lift off from a twig. In wind-tunnel experiments with crab spiders, the ballooning fan used 50–60 nanoscale fibers, each 121–323 nanometers wide and 3.22 ± 1.31 meters long. The researchers observed front-leg wind checking and proposed that small turbulent updrafts help the silk carry the spider; the exact sensory decision behind takeoff remains an open question. 1
