The Full Time Report - Episode 123: Europe Is Back, and Haaland Does Not Wait

Tuesday night put the Champions League back in the middle of the football week, with Aston Villa, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis and AEK Athens all starting with wins. This episode follows the useful bit behind the scorelines: which teams controlled the night, which ones were hanging on, and what the first European results tell us before Liverpool and Arsenal play on Wednesday.

Aston Villa 3-2 Club Brugge was the most entertaining English result of the night. John McGinn scored the opening goal of the new league phase in the eleventh minute, and Villa then added goals from Emiliano Buendia and Nicolas Jackson before half-time. Nicolò Tresoldi pulled one back for Club Brugge from the penalty spot, and the Belgian side hit the post while Villa had to defend their lead. 1

Villa's result matters because Unai Emery's side arrived in Europe after a difficult domestic opening. Three points away from home do not erase those league problems, but the performance gave Villa something concrete to build on. Villa scored three times before the break, then survived a second half that kept asking whether the early advantage was enough. UEFA named McGinn player of the match, and the shape of the evening was clear: Villa had the decisive spell, then had to show resistance.

Manchester City won 2-0 at Porto, with both goals coming from Erling Haaland. The first arrived just after half-time, and the second came in added time. The Guardian's match report described a scrappy game in which City lacked their usual fluency, while UEFA recorded Haaland's 59 goals in 59 Champions League appearances. 23

That is a very Manchester City kind of European result. Porto made the night awkward, but City kept the match scoreless until the interval and then found the player who usually changes the temperature of a game. Enzo Maresca told Amazon Prime before kick-off that his new side had to supply Haaland with quality and movement. The result suggests the new City are still being formed, but the old European habit of finding a way through a tight match is already useful.

Real Madrid beat Inter 2-1. Kylian Mbappe put Madrid ahead after fourteen minutes, Federico Valverde doubled the lead, and Carlos Augusto made the final stages uncomfortable. Thibaut Courtois made his 100th Champions League appearance and helped Madrid protect the result. 3

Borussia Dortmund beat Villarreal 3-2 in a second-half game that turned very quickly. An own goal put Dortmund in front, Villarreal equalised, and Serhou Guirassy scored twice, including a penalty. Villarreal pulled another goal back late, but Dortmund held on. Real Betis also came from behind to beat Lille 3-2, with Marc Bartra scoring twice and Troy Parrott completing the turnaround before Lille finished with ten men. AEK Athens beat Champions League debutants LASK 1-0 through a Răzvan Marin free-kick. 3

The common thread is that opening nights do not have to be elegant to be valuable. Madrid and City won while carrying different kinds of pressure. Dortmund, Betis and Villa turned good spells into wins, but all three allowed their opponents back into the game. The league phase is long, yet a first result still changes the next week. A team can prepare for Matchday 2 with three points and a problem, or with no points and a bigger problem.

Liverpool host Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, and Arsenal travel to Napoli. UEFA's fixture list also has Barcelona against Feyenoord, Paris Saint-Germain against Slovan Bratislava, Sporting against Galatasaray and Stuttgart against Viking. 4

Liverpool's manager Andoni Iraola said the first Champions League night at Anfield would be special, but he also made the football point that matters more. Iraola wants Liverpool to start proactively and press Atletico early. He said the match would be a big test, and he confirmed that Bradley Barcola is ready for more minutes after training normally with the squad. 5

That gives Liverpool a clear question. Can the intensity Iraola wants survive a much more demanding opponent than the team Liverpool beat at the weekend? Barcola's availability adds another option, but the first Champions League night under a new manager is less about one signing than about whether the team's habits travel.

Arsenal's attention turns to Napoli after the perfect Premier League start discussed in the last episode. Mikel Arteta has included William Saliba in Arsenal's Champions League squad, although he said the defender's return timetable remains uncertain. That is useful context before Arsenal's first European test: the squad is built for the competition, but the strongest version of it may not be available yet. 6

The Europa League has no result to add from Tuesday or Wednesday. UEFA's opening Europa League matchday is on 16 and 17 September, with Sunderland hosting AZ Alkmaar, Celtic hosting Ferencvaros, Crystal Palace hosting Lech Poznan and Bournemouth travelling to Real Sociedad among the fixtures. 7

The most interesting transfer story is not a fresh rumour. Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson told The Guardian that the club had been planning for a managerial change for eight or nine months before Eddie Howe left in July. Matthias Jaissle was part of that planning, and Wilson said Newcastle's preferred style remains aggressive, vertical and attacking. 8

The detail that makes the story worth keeping is the difference between the plan and the disruption. Wilson said Newcastle did not want to lose Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, but he described most of the rest of the window as planned. The club brought in eight players aged 24 or younger, including Nico Gonzalez as Guimaraes's replacement, and agreed a new five-year deal with Lewis Hall after Manchester United had shown interest.

That is a better way to read a transfer window after it closes. One sale can be unwanted and still fit the financial reality of the club. One new manager can arrive late and still be part of a longer plan. Newcastle's next job is to make the planning visible in matches. The early signs under Jaissle are promising, and Tuesday's Carabao Cup win at Millwall added another result, but the real test will be whether the new style survives a Premier League schedule.

There is another small piece of Chelsea news from Xabi Alonso's press conference before the Carabao Cup tie with Leeds. Alonso said Chelsea are happy with their start, but he also said the team is nowhere near its final version and should become better by January. He rejected reports that Estevao had told him he was worried about his opportunities and said he can count on the teenager this season. 9

That sounds like a manager protecting the size of the season. Chelsea lost to Arsenal on Sunday, but Alonso is trying to stop one defeat becoming a verdict on a new project. The same logic applies to City, Villa, Liverpool and Newcastle. New managers and new signings give you clues quickly, but they do not give you a finished team overnight.

The Champions League is back, and the opening night rewarded teams that found their decisive spell. Villa scored three before half-time and then defended the lead. City stayed patient until Haaland turned a tight match into a two-goal win. Madrid were tested after going two up, while Dortmund and Betis showed how quickly a European game can become a five-goal argument.

The number to keep is three. That is the lead Villa built before Brugge came back into the match, and it is also the number of points each winning side takes into the next round. The question for Wednesday is whether Liverpool and Arsenal can find their own decisive spell, or whether the first night of the week has already shown how little room Europe gives you to drift.
