FAANG digest, Jul 13-20: system design spreads

This week's reports widen the prep target from classic DSA to system design, resilience, production coding and fraud systems, while updated salary benchmarks give mid-to-senior candidates concrete negotiation anchors.

The week in one read

Across 10 concrete Glassdoor reports dated July 13-20, four candidates reported accepted offers and six reported no offer. The most useful shared signal is not a single company's question list. It is the widening scope of the loop: system design and production resilience are showing up beside familiar data-structure questions, while Stripe's current screen used a two-part non-algorithmic coding task with automated grading. A July 20 Reddit commenter described spending 20 minutes drawing a message queue in a mid-level technical screen, and a Netflix candidate who accepted an offer reported a TTL cache with LRU eviction plus a crash-resilient distributed file system. 1 2 3
The sample is small and the outcome mix is not a company pass rate. Glassdoor exposes dates, difficulty and outcomes, but not a comparable vote count for each report. The counts below therefore describe the public reports that were visible in the window, not a leaderboard of upvotes.

Hiring and process status

CompanyCurrent-window readWhat the reports showCandidate move
AmazonActive, with the clearest FAANG sampleThree SDE reports landed on Jul 13, 17 and 18. The Jul 17 candidate accepted after longest-substring, merge-sorted-lists and Frugality questions. The Jul 18 candidate also accepted but disclosed no question because of an NDA. The Jul 13 São Paulo candidate reported four one-hour interviews, no offer, and a behavioral prompt about using AI in a project. 4 5 6Keep DSA warm, but add structured Leadership Principles stories and a project-level explanation of AI use.
NetflixActive, but still a one-report signalAn anonymous employee who accepted an offer described a recruiter screen, two technical rounds and a behavioral interview. The technical prompts were a TTL cache with LRU eviction and a crash-resilient distributed file system. 2For backend roles, prepare cache expiry, failure recovery and storage trade-offs rather than only generic LeetCode.
GoogleOne thin current-week reportAn anonymous candidate in Tel Aviv reported no offer after a process covering experience, a resume discussion and one logic question. The report is too generic to establish a change in Google's SWE bar. 7Do not use this report to confirm or overturn the recent team-match discussion. Ask the recruiter for the exact sequence of technical review, team matching and committee review.
MetaNo visible current-week first-person interview reportThe visible Meta interview discussion page was updated July 17, but the dated first-person items exposed on the page were older. That is a coverage gap, not evidence of a reopening or a freeze. 8Keep Meta preparation role-specific until more current SWE or MLE outcomes appear.
StripeActive, but the screen is an OA gateAn anonymous candidate reported no offer after a HackerRank assessment containing a two-part non-algorithmic coding question with automated testing and grading. The candidate described the task as tricky and did not continue to later rounds. 3Practice reading a specification, writing testable production code and explaining edge cases, not just algorithm speed.
CloudflareTechnical signal mixed with process riskA Jul 13 anonymous candidate in London reported no offer after a medium LeetCode problem, tech-stack discussion and a repeat-attack defense question. A Jul 18 Forward Deployed Engineer candidate described a take-home assignment and technical discussions, then a rejection by email after promised recruiter follow-ups did not happen. 9 10Ask for decision timing and the next step in writing when another offer creates a deadline.
Capital OneStrong adjacent-employer question signalAn anonymous employee who accepted an SDE offer described fraud-detection design, virtual credit-card transaction validation and matrix-diagonal sorting. A Lead Software Engineer candidate reported four one-hour interviews: two technical, one behavioral and one case interview, with four technical LeetCode questions in the first round, but no offer. 11 12Treat banking systems as a useful system-design practice set: fraud, encoded identifiers, consistency and auditability.
MicrosoftNo countable current-week reportThe Microsoft SWE page returned a verification shell rather than a readable report during this window. It should not be used to claim either active hiring or a new freeze.Confirm that a requisition is funded and able to extend an external offer before investing in a long process.
Blind's Amazon interview page was likewise a page-level index updated July 15, not a set of visible, dated current-week first-person posts. 13 The absence of a dated Blind item matters because the channel's brief calls for current reports, not a page refresh date.
"had a technical screen yesterday ... they asked about system design but it was for a mid-level role so i wasnt expecting that much depth." Reddit commenter /u/Impossible_Hold9419; background not publicly verified. The comment received 1 point and is a single candidate account, not a company-wide statistic. 14

Question bank: what to practice now

The table separates exact prompts from broader process descriptions. Each Glassdoor author is anonymous, so the author background is not publicly verified. The Reddit author is named but has no publicly verified professional background.
Company / roleRound or formatPrompt or reported formatOutcomePractice implication
Amazon SDETechnical plus behavioralLongest substring without repeating characters; merge two sorted linked lists; "Tell me about a time you delivered results with limited resources" (Frugality).Accepted offer. Anonymous employee; background not public. 5Be ready to move from a clean coding pattern into a quantified STAR story without losing specificity.
Amazon SDEFour one-hour interviewsPast-experience question: "Tell me about a time you applied artificial intelligence in a project and how you did it."No offer. Anonymous candidate in São Paulo; background not public. 6Explain the problem, your contribution, evaluation method and trade-offs. Saying only that a model was used will be thin.
Netflix SWETwo technical rounds plus behavioralSimulate a TTL cache with LRU eviction; design a crash-resilient distributed file system.Accepted offer. Anonymous employee; background not public. 2Practice expiration semantics, recovery after partial failure, metadata durability and operational ownership.
Capital One SDETechnical roundsDesign a robust fraud-detection system; validate virtual credit-card transactions from encoded transaction IDs; sort matrix diagonals.Accepted offer. Anonymous employee; background not public. 11Connect threat modeling to data modeling, replay protection, audit trails and testable invariants.
Capital One Lead SWEFour one-hour interviewsFour technical LeetCode questions in round one; later rounds were two technical, one behavioral and one case interview. The named coding prompt was a simplified banking system. No offer. Anonymous candidate in Chicago; background not public. 12Expect the same problem to be judged across coding, case reasoning and communication, not in an isolated algorithm round.
Stripe SWEHackerRank assessmentTwo-part non-algorithmic coding question with automated testing and grading. No offer before later stages. Anonymous candidate; background not public. 3Read the contract closely, write small tests first and make failure behavior explicit.
Cloudflare Software InternTechnical roundOne medium LeetCode problem, tech-stack discussion and "How would you defend against a repeat attack".No offer. Anonymous candidate in London; background not public. 9Review replay protection, idempotency, nonce or token design and the limits of each defense.
Google SWEExperience discussion plus logic questionResume and experience discussion; one logic question. No offer. Anonymous candidate in Tel Aviv; background not public. 7Treat this as a narrow anecdote. It does not justify a new Google question pattern.
r/cscareerquestions mid-level screenTechnical screen, author accountThe candidate spent about 20 minutes drawing a message queue on a whiteboard and received little interviewer guidance.Outcome not reported. /u/Impossible_Hold9419; background not publicly verified. 15Start with requirements and constraints, then state queue choice, delivery semantics, backpressure and failure handling before adding components.
A minimum-count view of the sample shows three reports containing system-design or resilience material, four reports containing classic coding or data-structure prompts, two reports with behavioral prompts and one non-algorithmic assessment. These categories overlap, and they are counts of visible reports, not population frequencies. Netflix and Capital One supplied the clearest design questions; Amazon supplied the most direct DSA-plus-behavioral combination. 2 5 11

Compensation benchmark

No current-window Glassdoor interview report in this sample disclosed a signed-offer breakdown with base, signing bonus, equity and total compensation. The current Levels.fyi pages do provide level-specific U.S. compensation benchmarks, all marked updated July 20, 2026. They are reported compensation aggregates, not proof that any interview above produced an offer this week.
Company / levelTotal compensationBaseAnnual stockBonusSource and use
Google L5$419K$230K$159K$30.8KMid-level anchor; pair with Google's thin current-week interview signal. 16
Google L6$663K$272K$332K$58.6KSenior anchor; do not treat it as a guaranteed offer. 16
Meta E5$461K$234K$202K$25.3KCompensation benchmark only; the visible current-week interview page had no dated report. 17
Meta E6$712K$267K$401K$44.3KSenior benchmark; role and hiring status still need confirmation. 17
Amazon L5$271K$178K$91.3K$2KLevel-specific Amazon anchor; current reports show both accepted and no-offer outcomes. 18
Amazon L6$425K$222K$195K$8.4KUse level and vesting schedule, not a generic Amazon average. 18
Amazon L7$673K$263K$410K$0Principal-level benchmark; check whether the target team is a special AI or lab package. 18
Netflix L5$502K$502K$0$0High-cash benchmark that lines up with Netflix's current report, but not with a disclosed offer. 19
Netflix L6$720K$720K$0$0Senior high-cash anchor; ask about scope and level because the current report gave no level. 19
Databricks L5$654K$216K$418K$19.1KSaaS benchmark; no dated current-week interview report was visible in this pass. 20
Databricks L6$1.06M$246K$781K$38.2KEquity-heavy senior benchmark; discount private-company liquidity risk when negotiating. 20
OpenAI L4$674K$275K$399K$0AI-lab benchmark, not a current-week offer. 21
OpenAI L5$962K$343K$619K$0Senior AI-lab benchmark; confirm equity terms and liquidity before comparing it with public RSUs. 21
The component mix matters as much as the headline. Levels.fyi shows Amazon's displayed RSU schedule as 5% / 15% / 40% / 40% over four years, Netflix's as 25% each year, and Databricks' displayed schedule as 40% / 30% / 20% / 10% for one RSU schedule. Those are company-page schedules, not terms from the current-week interview reports. 18 19 20

What to do before the next loop

  1. Practice one stateful design. Use a queue-backed workflow, a TTL cache or a fraud detector. Start with requirements and load assumptions. Then name the state that must remain correct, the failure mode that can corrupt it, the retry or idempotency rule, and the operational signal you would watch. This directly covers the Netflix, Capital One and Reddit prompts without memorizing their wording.
  2. Keep the classic set compact. Longest substring, merge sorted lists and matrix diagonals are still appearing. Solve them cleanly, then spend a few minutes on tests, complexity and one follow-up. A familiar prompt can still expose whether the candidate communicates while coding.
  3. Prepare one defensible AI story. Amazon's São Paulo report asked how the candidate applied AI in a project. Be ready to state the problem, why AI was appropriate, what you personally built, how you measured quality and what failed. Do not turn it into a tool-name inventory.
  4. Manage the process as part of the interview. Ask for the next decision point, expected date and whether another team or committee must act. Cloudflare's Jul 18 report shows why a positive verbal signal is not the same as a scheduled decision.
  5. Negotiate from components. Use the level-specific table as an opening range, then request base, sign-on, annual bonus, equity value, vesting and refresh assumptions separately. For private-company equity, ask how the number was valued and what liquidity conditions apply. The pages provide benchmarks; they do not replace a signed offer.
The practical read for this window is narrow but actionable: mid-level candidates should add system-design depth, senior candidates should defend operational trade-offs, and everyone should expect at least one round where the problem is less recognizable than the title suggests.
The core first-person sources behind these preparation targets are the July 20 Reddit discussion, the July 15 Netflix report and the July 19 Capital One report. 1 2 11
The visible report sample did not include a current-week signed-offer breakdown. The benchmark table is labeled separately so readers can use it without confusing aggregate salary data with individual interview outcomes.
"The technical interview experience itself was strong, but the communication and coordination were disappointing enough that I would hesitate to interview with Cloudflare again." Anonymous Cloudflare candidate; background not publicly verified. 10
"I was relieved to receive the offer, which I happily accepted." Anonymous Capital One employee; background not publicly verified. 11
"The second round involved designing a crash resilient distributed file system." Anonymous Netflix employee; background not publicly verified. 2
