Giannis Lands, Brown Market Opens

Giannis Antetokounmpo is headed to Miami, the Celtics’ Jaylen Brown situation is now the next major market, and Milwaukee’s rebuild begins with Tyler Herro, young players, picks, and two first-round rookies. The digest also covers draft-night trades, Ja Morant’s stalled market, Harden/Cavs, LeBron/Warriors, Sabonis, Bucks options, and the free-agency setup.

The Giannis Antetokounmpo market finally stopped freezing the rest of the league. Miami won the two-time MVP, Milwaukee started a full rebuild, Boston missed and immediately became the next pressure point, and the draft turned several rumor-board hypotheticals into real roster math.
This week’s useful distinction is status. Giannis, Trae Young, Isaiah Stewart, LaMelo Ball, Miles Bridges, and several option decisions are done. Jaylen Brown, Tyler Herro, Ja Morant, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis, James Harden, and the remaining free-agent bigs are now the next board.

The Giannis deal: Miami got the star, Milwaukee chose the rebuild package

The Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Bucks, while Milwaukee received Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick used on Nate Ament, a 2030 first-round swap, unprotected 2031 and 2033 first-round picks, and a 2033 second-round pick. The trade cannot formally take effect before the new league year on July 6, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that more players or picks could still be added before execution. 1 2
Boston’s final offer was Jaylen Brown plus two first-round picks, but Milwaukee chose Miami’s younger package and longer asset runway. NBC Sports Boston, relaying ESPN reporting, said Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam pushed for the Heat deal because he did not want to risk Brown wanting out of Milwaukee after one season. 3
For Miami, the immediate basketball bet is simple and expensive. ESPN’s trade-grade breakdown projected a starting group of Davion Mitchell, Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins, Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo, with Portis as the important frontcourt depth piece. ESPN gave the Heat a B- and the Bucks a B+, framing Miami’s side as a narrow-title-window swing and Milwaukee’s side as a strong return from a compromised position. 4
The betting market moved, but not all the way to title-favorite territory. CBS Sports reported that DraftKings shortened Miami from +3000 before the trade to +1800, fifth behind the Spurs, Thunder, Celtics, and Knicks. Sports Betting Dime tracked a similar move from +4000 to +1800 and said the easy pre-deal price had already disappeared. 5 6

Boston’s fallout is now its own story

Brown’s status moved from hypothetical trade chip to active league question. Shams Charania reported that the Celtics were "actively engaged" in Brown trade talks with multiple interested teams, and Hoops Rumors also cited reporting that Boston was hunting for a big man, with Evan Mobley discussed as a target. 7
That does not make a deal automatic. ESPN’s free-agency intel described three Boston paths: trade Brown without the ideal return, extend him to calm the situation, or bring him back without a new extension and accept the tension. The same ESPN piece noted that Brown has roughly three years and $183M left on his supermax and can sign a two-year, $142M extension starting July 26. 8
Brown has already answered publicly. On Twitch, he said, "All the people that's doubting me, that want me to do this, or want me gone, or whatever, you're turning me into a monster." He later posted that nobody has won more combined regular-season and playoff games since he entered the league 10 years ago. 9 10
Herro is the other spillover piece. He landed in Milwaukee, not Detroit, but ESPN and Hoops Rumors both reported that the Bucks are evaluating whether to keep him or flip him, with Detroit still interested after creating cap room in the Isaiah Stewart deal. 4 11

Draft recap: Dybantsa first, Bucks add two first-rounders

Washington used the No. 1 pick on AJ Dybantsa, Utah took Darryn Peterson at No. 2, and Memphis took Cameron Boozer at No. 3. ESPN, NBA.com, and USA TODAY all list the first round with Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer, Caleb Wilson, and Keaton Wagler as the top five. 12 13 14
Milwaukee’s post-Giannis draft matters more than a normal rebuilding team’s draft because the Bucks do not control their 2027 first-round pick. They used No. 10 on Arizona guard Brayden Burries and used Miami’s No. 13 pick on Tennessee forward Nate Ament. CBS Sports graded both picks B+ and wrote that Dallas selecting Morez Johnson Jr. at No. 9 helped Burries fall to Milwaukee. 15
The draft also produced a set of salary and pick-position trades that now shape the rumor board.
MoveWhat changedRoster-market read
Grizzlies moved down from No. 16 to No. 17, then to No. 21Memphis ended with Karim Lopez and five extra second-rounders from the two-step Thunder/Pistons sequence. 14Memphis added rebuild inventory while Ja Morant remains unresolved.
Knicks sent No. 24 to the Lakers; the Lakers/Knicks/Mavericks chain moved Sergio De Larrea at No. 25USA TODAY’s tracker lists Cameron Carr to the Lakers and De Larrea ultimately routed to Dallas. 14Back-end firsts became cap-and-fit tools rather than pure prospect bets.
Cavaliers moved No. 29 to SacramentoCleveland sent Alex Karaban’s rights to the Kings for No. 34 and a future second-rounder. 14Cleveland preserved flexibility while negotiating Harden’s new deal.
Mavericks moved No. 30 to PhoenixPhoenix traded up for Koa Peat, whom CBS called a notable faller. 15Phoenix added a local frontcourt prospect after later adding Miles Bridges.
CBS and Bleacher Report agreed on several draft winners: Memphis, Chicago, Oklahoma City, and Milwaukee all drew favorable reviews, while Dallas took the sharpest criticism for using No. 9 on Morez Johnson Jr. instead of adding an elite guard next to Cooper Flagg. 16 17

Rumor board: what is done, active, stalled, or speculative

Player / situationStatusContract or cap hookWhat to watch next
Jaylen Brown, CelticsActive market, not guaranteed to moveRoughly three years and $183M left; extension window opens July 26. 8Whether Boston can turn Brown into a frontcourt anchor rather than a lesser wing package.
Tyler Herro, BucksActive flip candidateHerro is owed $33M and becomes a free agent after 2026-27. 11Detroit’s cap space fits Herro’s salary after the Stewart trade.
Ja Morant, GrizzliesStill not tradedMorant has two guaranteed years left, about $87M total. 11Windhorst said Memphis is highly motivated, but teams may want value attached to take the contract risk.
LaMelo Ball, TimberwolvesDoneMinnesota acquired Ball and Josh Green from Charlotte for Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first, three swaps, and three seconds. 11One star point-guard landing spot is gone, which narrows the Morant market.
Isaiah Stewart, GrizzliesDoneDetroit sent Stewart to Memphis for three future second-round picks and opened roughly $33M in cap room. 18Detroit’s next swing, with Herro, LeBron, and Kawhi Leonard all linked as possible targets in reporting.
Domantas Sabonis, KingsStalledSabonis has two years left at $45.4M and $48.6M. 19The Hornets framework died after Charlotte sent Miles Bridges to Phoenix. Toronto remains a name, not an active deal.
Kawhi Leonard, ClippersActive exploratory talksLeonard has one year and $50.3M left and can extend July 6. 20Toronto is the most frequent link; Dallas is interested but not viewed as the most viable landing spot.
Kyrie Irving, MavericksSpeculativeIrving turns 35 in March 2027 and has a 2027-28 player option worth $42.4M. 21The Ringer suggested Dallas should consider it, but no active talks were reported.
The most important reversal is Morant. Last week’s board treated New Orleans and Minnesota as live destinations. This week, Hoops Rumors relayed Windhorst saying the Grizzlies are "highly motivated" to trade Morant but that the two remaining guaranteed years make the market difficult. Windhorst also said, "I just can't see him playing for the Grizzlies again." 11
The Sabonis board moved the opposite way: less urgent, not more. HoopsHype reported that Charlotte traded Miles Bridges, a 2029 first, and a 2027 second to Phoenix for Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale, and a 2033 first. That removes the Bridges-centered Kings-Hornets framework that had been discussed around Sabonis. 19

Option deadline and free-agency setup

James Harden declined his $42.3M player option with Cleveland and is negotiating a multiyear Cavaliers deal expected in the $28M to $32M annual range, according to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com. Harden averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 26 games after Cleveland acquired him at the trade deadline. 22
LeBron James is the loudest free-agent uncertainty. Bleacher Report cited Brian Windhorst saying the Lakers have told Rich Paul they want James back but have not made a formal offer. USA TODAY then connected Draymond Green’s $27.7M opt-out to Golden State’s pursuit, with Windhorst noting that Green and James share Klutch Sports representation and that a Green opt-out creates room for the Warriors to offer a free agent. 23 24
Milwaukee’s post-Giannis option cluster now looks like a housekeeping board for a rebuild. Kevin Porter Jr. exercised a $5.39M player option, Jericho Sims exercised a $2.8M option, and Gary Harris exercised a $3.8M option. Gary Trent Jr. was expected to decline a $3.88M option, Taurean Prince remained unreported as of Monday morning, and Andre Jackson Jr.’s team-option guarantee date is July 7 rather than June 29. 25 26
Several other roster moves matter for the next week’s trade math. Deandre Ayton exercised an $8.1M player option with the Lakers. Marcus Smart is widely expected to decline a $5.4M option and seek a longer-term deal, with Houston linked because of his history with Ime Udoka. Zach LaVine exercised a $49M option with Sacramento, which keeps him trade-eligible as an expiring contract. 27 28 29
Trae Young’s situation is settled. He agreed to a four-year, $212M Wizards deal after declining a $49M player option, giving Washington a Young, AJ Dybantsa, Anthony Davis, and Alexandre Sarr core after a 17-65 season. 30 31
Free agency opens for negotiation on June 30 at 6 p.m. ET, and contracts can be signed July 6 at 12:01 a.m. ET. Hoops Rumors’ top-50 board still lists Jalen Duren, LeBron James, Walker Kessler, Peyton Watson, Kristaps Porzingis, Andrew Wiggins, Rui Hachimura, and Norman Powell among the names that can shape the market. 32

Fantasy and roster-construction watch

PlayerSignalPractical read
Giannis AntetokounmpoBuy Heat usage, price in missed gamesThe role is elite, but Miami’s depth and his recent availability make regular-season rest a real variable. 4
Jaylen BrownHold until destination clarityBrown can still be Boston’s lead scorer or become the centerpiece elsewhere; the spread between outcomes is too wide for a clean sell call. 8
Tyler HerroWatch Detroit and Milwaukee usageIf Milwaukee keeps him, he can stabilize a young roster; if Detroit lands him, the Pistons’ new cap room gives him a cleaner scoring lane. 11
Ja MorantHold only with risk toleranceThe contract is blocking trade value, and the Grizzlies have already drafted Boozer and collected picks. 11
James HardenStable if Cleveland deal landsA $28M-$32M annual range points to Cleveland treating him as a real rotation engine, not a short bridge. 22
LeBron JamesTrack team first, salary secondA Lakers return keeps continuity; a Warriors mid-level path would be the bigger basketball change and a major salary cut. 23
The next watch list is narrower than last week’s. Brown and Herro are the direct Giannis aftershocks. Morant is available but hard to move. Harden and Trae Young look headed toward settled roles. LeBron and the Warriors are the high-variance free-agency lever.
