Small-claims court does not have one nationwide dollar limit. Your state sets the cap and filing fee, and some states use different limits for individuals and businesses. If your claim is too large, you may be able to reduce the amount you request to remain in small claims, or file in a higher court.
At the clerk's window, ask:
"What are the limit, fee, service method, and deadline for my claim?"
Open the hearing with a short chain of facts: what you are owed, why, when it became due, which exhibits prove it, and the exact judgment you want.
"Your Honor, I am asking for $5,000. The defendant did not pay for work completed June 3rd. My contract, invoice, messages, and demand letter prove it. I requested payment June 10th. It remains unpaid. I request $5,000 plus court costs."
