Anthropic weekly, August 17–24: IPO machinery, a new copyright suit, and Claude's enterprise controls
Anthropic's week brought reported IPO financing and governance plans, a new music-copyright lawsuit, customer-controlled retention under consideration, and production releases across Claude's agent stack.
Anthropic's August 17–24 week moved the IPO story from valuation talk toward the machinery around a public company: a possible record-sized listing, a revolving credit facility, a new lead bank, and a proposed founder-control structure. Anthropic also widened Claude's production tooling and began preparing a new data-retention design for enterprise customers. A new music-copyright lawsuit added another legal front.
IPO preparation becomes an operating plan
Anthropic's annual revenue run rate passed $65 billion by the end of July, Reuters reported on August 17, citing a person familiar with the company's investor updates. The figure was up from $47 billion in May and about $9 billion at the end of 2025. A run rate extrapolates a shorter period's sales into a full-year figure. 1
The new figure sits inside a much larger reported IPO plan. Bloomberg said on August 20 that Anthropic expects to match or beat SpaceX's record first-time share sale, which raised $75 billion at the offering and reached $86.2 billion after the overallotment option. Anthropic could file publicly as soon as the end of August, although the size, timing, and valuation remain under discussion. Bloomberg also reported preliminary second-quarter revenue above $11.5 billion and a $190 billion–$200 billion 2028 revenue forecast. 2
Debt planning is moving in parallel. Reuters reported on August 18 that Anthropic's revolving credit facility could exceed its roughly $10 billion target. The company asked its most active banks to commit about $1.25 billion each, with a second tier encouraged to offer around $1 billion. The discussions remain open, and Anthropic could settle for the target or a smaller amount. 3
Bloomberg also reported that Citigroup is set to join Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan in the top ranks of IPO advisers. The bank already participated in a previous $2.5 billion revolving credit line. Anthropic and Citigroup declined to comment, and more banks may be added. 4
Governance is part of the same preparation. Reuters reported on August 18 that Anthropic was considering a class of shares with extra voting power for CEO Dario Amodei and other co-founders. The reported plan would also preserve the existing body of non-shareholder trustees through a special class of stock that could elect a majority of the board. The details could change, and Anthropic did not comment. 5
Together, the reports describe four pieces of IPO readiness: sales growth to support the valuation case, debt capacity to fund operations, banks assembling the offering, and voting rights that could protect founder control. None of the reported terms is final until Anthropic files public documents.
A new copyright case targets Claude's training data
Round Hill Music sued Anthropic and Suno in California federal court on August 17. The independent music publisher alleged that Anthropic used lyrics from at least 500 songs in training Claude, including works by James Brown, The Kinks, and the Goo Goo Dolls. Round Hill said it may add 10,000 or more compositions and seek damages that could approach or exceed $1 billion. The case is a complaint and contains allegations; no court has ruled on the claims. 6
The case is Round Hill Music LP v. Anthropic PBC, No. 5:26-cv-08505, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. It adds music publishers to Anthropic's copyright disputes over song lyrics, after the company reached a separate $1.5 billion settlement with authors. The complaint raises a direct training-data question for Claude.
Enterprise customers may get a different place to keep frontier-model logs
Anthropic is planning a safety system that would let enterprise customers retain required data on their own cloud infrastructure, Bloomberg reported on August 20. The reported design would still require 30 days of retention for customers using Anthropic's most capable models, but the customer could keep the data in its own environment instead of sending it to Anthropic. Anthropic declined to comment, and the system is expected later this year rather than being available now. 7
Anthropic introduced the 30-day policy in June for Fable and Mythos traffic to help detect emerging cyberattacks, while saying the data would not be used for model training. Customer-controlled storage would address a procurement obstacle for regulated companies that need both safety monitoring and tighter control over sensitive prompts, code, and outputs.
Claude's agent stack is moving out of beta
Anthropic's August 19 platform release notes moved several tools into a more production-oriented stage. Computer Use left beta as
computer_toolset_20260801, adding batch actions, default zoom, and per-member configuration. Anthropic also launched Browser Use, which lets an application-hosted browser read accessibility trees, forms, tabs, and element references, with support for downloads and optional file uploads. Files API and Agent Skills also left beta, removing their required beta headers while keeping older headers functional. The new toolsets are available across Fable 5, Mythos 5, Opus 5, Sonnet 5, and Opus 4.8. 8On August 18, Anthropic expanded Claude Cowork on web and mobile interfaces to all paid accounts. The Google Workspace connectors also gained the ability to send Gmail messages and manage Google Drive files. Claude is moving from answering inside a chat window toward taking actions inside a customer's existing work systems. 9
Compute is gaining a senior hardware owner
Anthropic hired Amir Salek to join its compute team, Bloomberg reported on August 21. Salek founded Google's custom-chip program, ran the tensor-processing-unit business until 2022, and delivered Google's first seven TPU generations. He will report to James Bradbury. Anthropic has begun hiring for an in-house silicon effort while continuing to buy chips from Nvidia, Google, and Amazon. 10
The appointment gives Anthropic a named leader for a hardware ambition that has so far appeared through hiring and capacity deals. It is an organizational move while Anthropic still relies on external suppliers.
What to watch next
The week's funding signal was debt and IPO preparation; no new Anthropic equity round was announced. No named enterprise customer announcement or CEO-level leadership change appeared in the window. The next hard markers are a public IPO filing, a final credit-facility commitment, the Round Hill case docket, and Anthropic's rollout of customer-controlled retention. For enterprise buyers, the practical question is whether the new storage design arrives with clear deletion, access, and audit controls. For investors, the first public filing will show which reported revenue, loss, governance, and financing figures Anthropic will put on the record.
