Ty Gibbs wins Iowa, Schuchart owns the Ironman and Richmond takes over: Week 33 (2026)

Ty Gibbs beat Christopher Bell by 0.253 seconds at Iowa, while Carson Kvapil went back-to-back in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and Logan Schuchart led every lap of the Ironman 55. Cup: Gibbs wins the JGR duel Iowa kept setting up

Ty Gibbs took the win after Christopher Bell led 108 laps and Ryan Blaney led 129. Gibbs led only the final 20 laps, but that was the part that counted: he held Bell off by 0.253 seconds. The official top 10 was: 4

The race turned ugly early. Tyler Reddick spun on Lap 4 and collected Erik Jones; a late restart then took out Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman, John Hunter Nemechek, Ryan Preece and Riley Herbst. NASCAR's recap says Hamlin kept the points lead and stretched it to 103 points over Gibbs. Reddick slipped to fourth, 120 points behind Hamlin, while Jones fell to 20th and sits 50 points behind Austin Cindric for the last Chase-eligible place. Shane van Gisbergen remained 15th, 47 points above the current cutline. 1

O'Reilly: Kvapil wins twice, and Daytona will decide the bubble

Carson Kvapil won a second straight O'Reilly race, beating Rajah Caruth by 0.343 seconds after two overtimes. The final 10 laps came after the scheduled 250: an eight-car crash in Turn 2 on the penultimate restart produced the 12th caution and tied the race record. 2

Kvapil is now second in points and 28 points ahead of third-place Creed. The last two Chase places are a mess: Brent Crews and Sawalich are tied for 11th and 12th, Taylor Gray is one point behind them, and Caruth is 15 points back. One regular-season race remains, at Daytona. 2

ARCA East: McKee turns a seven-point hole into a two-point lead

Sixteen-year-old Tristan McKee won the JR&CO 150 at Iowa after leading 150 laps and holding off teammate Carson Brown by 0.95 seconds. Jake Bollman was third, Max Reaves fourth and Isaac Kitzmiller fifth. 5

McKee entered Iowa seven points behind Reaves after a 32nd-place finish at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The win put McKee unofficially two points ahead with one East race left, the Sept. 17 finale at Bristol. Bollman, the national ARCA points leader, added a third-place finish. 6

Dirt and modifieds: Schuchart and Hirschman take the short-track headlines

Logan Schuchart led all 55 laps at I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park to win the Ironman 55. Michael Kofoid climbed from 18th to second, Carson Macedo finished third, Donny Schatz fourth and Spencer Bayston fifth. Schuchart's second Ironman win paid $25,000 and was his second World of Outlaws victory of 2026. Knoxville is next. 3

Matt Hirschman won the 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, his first win there in his 34th start. Austin Beers was second, Patrick Emerling third, Chase Dowling fourth and Matt Swanson fifth. It was Hirschman's second Modified Tour win of 2026; Emerling's three-race winning streak ended. 7 8

IMSA: no new race, but Heinrich is back in the GTP fight

The official WeatherTech result page still lists Road America's Aug. 2 six-hour race as the latest 2026 result, and the Michelin Pilot Challenge page still lists the Aug. 1 Road America 120. Both races fall outside this issue's Aug. 3–9 event window, so there is no new WeatherTech or Pilot finishing order to add here. 9 10

The fresh IMSA development is the championship math. Laurin Heinrich's Road America runner-up finish moved him to 118 points behind Jack Aitken with two races left, after the gap had been 203 points following Watkins Glen. The remaining WeatherTech rounds are Indianapolis on Sept. 18–20 and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Sept. 30–Oct. 3. IMSA also says Heinrich is expected to join Porsche Penske Motorsport's factory team in 2027. 11

Thompson gets a Chevrolet seat for 2027

Dean Thompson will leave Sam Hunt Racing and join Haas Factory Team in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series for 2027. Haas plans to expand to three full-time cars; Thompson Pipe Group and MCM Transportation will be his primary partners. NASCAR says the car number and crew chief are still to be announced. 12

A new stage-break procedure started at Iowa

For the rest of 2026, a natural caution with 10 or fewer laps left in a stage ends that stage immediately. The leader receives the green-and-white checkered flag with the yellow, stage points are awarded, and that caution becomes the scheduled stage break. The change is meant to avoid a one-lap shootout followed by another long caution. 13

The Iowa inspection report also matters to the points chase. Ryan Preece's No. 60 and Todd Gilliland's No. 34 each failed inspection twice; both car chiefs were ejected for the rest of the weekend and the teams lost pit-stall selection. A Sunday update then put Brad Keselowski's No. 6, Chase Elliott's No. 9 and Denny Hamlin's No. 11 to the rear for unapproved adjustments. 14

IMSA adds a historic Daytona support race

HSR and IMSA announced a 16-car HSR IMSA Classic exhibition for the 2027 Rolex 24 weekend at Daytona. The Jan. 30–31 Rolex 24 weekend will include 30-minute races for authentic 1981–1993 IMSA GTP, GTP Lights, GTO and GTU-era cars, with the final session scheduled before the Rolex 24. 15

The NHRA Mission Foods national Brainerd Nationals are Aug. 20–23, not this week's event; the race is the penultimate stop before the Countdown to the Championship. 20

The next seven days therefore have three different pressure points: Richmond trims the Cup regular season, Knoxville decides who carries sprint-car momentum into the sport's biggest week, and Berlin gives the regional Super Late Model field a 250-lap test on Wednesday. The O'Reilly title fight, meanwhile, has one more regular-season race to run at Daytona.
