Myth #12 - Cold Plunges Are Not a Fat-Loss Shortcut
Cold plunges can raise energy expenditure, but the dose matters. A systematic review of 10 randomized trials found an increase equivalent to about 188 calories per day under controlled cold exposure, typically involving hours of cooling rather than a quick dip. 1
That acute calorie bump has not translated into reliable weight or fat loss from intermittent cold exposure alone. 2 In a randomized crossover trial of 15 adults, a 30-minute immersion at 16 C was followed by roughly 230 more calories eaten than after thermoneutral-water immersion. 3
Cold water may still have a place in recovery, but routine immersion immediately after lifting may modestly reduce muscle-growth adaptations; an eight-study meta-analysis rated the underlying evidence as fair to poor. 4 For fat loss, use the boring swap that is easier to measure: track food intake and train consistently.
