Milford Track: Four Days Through New Zealand's Fiordland

The Milford Track runs 53.5 kilometres through Fiordland National Park on New Zealand's South Island. The four-day route starts with a boat from Lake Te Anau, crosses Omanui/McKinnon Pass, and ends with a short boat ride to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi. 1

The route's signature effort is the climb to Omanui/McKinnon Pass at 1,154 metres, followed by a long descent. A side trip reaches Sutherland Falls, which drops 580 metres in three leaps. 12

The practical catch is that the track is one-way, its three huts must be booked in advance during the November–April Great Walks season, transport at both ends must be arranged in advance, and there is no cellphone coverage on the track. 1
