Three Trails Worth the Drive: August 26–September 2, 2026
Three current picks for August 26–September 2: Banff’s Healy Pass alpine meadows under free Canada Strong Pass admission, Rocky Mountain’s Black Lake via Timed Entry+, and Washington’s Lake Valhalla if Smithbrook Road is driveable.
For August 26–September 2, late-summer alpine is still open across three different trail systems. Healy Pass gives Banff’s meadow-and-ridge day while free Parks Canada admission lasts through September 7. Black Lake via Glacier Gorge is the Rocky Mountain National Park pick once Timed Entry+ is locked in. Lake Valhalla is the Cascades berry-season lake, if Smithbrook Road is driveable for your vehicle.
Quick comparison
| Trail | Difficulty, distance, gain, time | Why go this week | Parking and access | Go/no-go call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Healy Pass Trail, Banff National Park, Alberta | Moderate; 8.8 km one way (~17.6 km return); 650 m gain; 6–7 hours. | Parks Canada rated the trail Good and mainly dry on Aug. 26, inside the late wildflower window, with free admission still available through Sept. 7. | Sunshine Village base lot, 18 km southwest of Banff. A parks pass is normally required; admission is free under Canada Strong Pass through Sept. 7. A park-wide fire ban remains in effect. | Go on a clear morning after rechecking the Banff conditions page and mountain forecast. Skip wood fires; treat Extreme fire danger as a same-day check. |
| Black Lake via Glacier Gorge, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado | Moderate; 5.0 mi / 8.0 km one way; 1,430 ft / 436 m gain from Glacier Gorge Junction. | An Aug. 20 park report found the Glacier Gorge route mostly dry to Mills and Black Lake after recent rain. National Park Week runs through Aug. 30. | Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road is required 5 a.m.–6 p.m. ($2 Recreation.gov fee plus a separate entrance pass). Park at Park & Ride and take the free Bear Lake shuttle; the Glacier Gorge lot fills early. | Go early only with Timed Entry+ secured and an afternoon-thunderstorm plan. Turn around if storms build. |
| Lake Valhalla via Smithbrook, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Washington | Moderate/Hard; 7.0 miles roundtrip; 1,500 ft gain; high point 5,050 ft. | Aug. 23 and Aug. 25 WTA reports found the trail snow-free and in good shape, with no bugs on Aug. 25. WTA lists late-summer berries as part of the seasonal payoff. | Smithbrook Trailhead on Forest Road 6700, about 3 miles off U.S. 2. The Forest Service says no fees are required. An Aug. 25 hiker report said the road needs high clearance because of deep ruts. | Conditional go only if your vehicle can handle the road and the local air-quality / fire alerts look acceptable. Turn around before damaging the vehicle. |
Healy Pass Trail, Banff National Park
8.8 km one way · 650 m gain · moderate · 6–7 hours return
Healy Pass is the Banff alpine day that still fits late August. Parks Canada describes a rooty, rocky climb along Healy Creek that opens into meadows above treeline, with wildflowers from mid-July into late August and alpine larches later in September. 1
The same-day condition signal is unusually strong for a weekly pick: Parks Canada rated Healy Pass Good on Aug. 26, mainly dry, and asked hikers to stay on designated trails and viewpoints. That report is why the route belongs in this window, but it is still a long day above treeline once weather turns. 2
Free admission is part of the timing. Parks Canada’s Canada Strong Pass covers free admission from June 19 through September 7, 2026, so this week sits inside the last stretch of that window. Free admission does not cover every service or parking arrangement outside the park gate, so treat parking and any shuttle separately. 3
The access gate: Sunshine Village base and the fire ban
The trail starts behind the main gondola building at the Sunshine Village parking area, 18 km southwest of Banff at the end of the Sunshine Village Access Road off the Trans-Canada Highway. Parks Canada lists mixed paved and gravel parking, flush toilets, and benches at the base lot. 1
Banff’s fire ban took effect July 30 at noon and remains in effect until further notice. Wood-burning campfires and charcoal barbecues are prohibited; gas or propane stoves remain allowed. The ban does not close Healy Pass, but it removes any wood-fire plan from the day. 4
The Banff forecast issued Aug. 26 called for a sunny high near 29°C that day, then a 60% chance of afternoon showers on Thursday, mainly sunny and cooler near 20°C on Friday, and a 60% chance of showers with a high near 16°C on Saturday. Friday looks like the cleanest midweek alpine window in that outlook. 5
Best plan: start from the Sunshine Village base lot with layers, rain gear, and a downloaded map. Go when the Aug. 26-style trail rating still holds and the mountain forecast stays workable; make it a no-go if thunderstorms, smoke, or a new closure hits the Sunshine side. Stay on the marked trail through the meadows.
Black Lake via Glacier Gorge, Rocky Mountain National Park
5.0 mi / 8.0 km one way · 1,430 ft / 436 m gain · moderate
Black Lake is the Glacier Gorge destination that still rewards an early start in late August. The National Park Service lists the hike from Glacier Gorge Junction at 5.0 miles / 8.0 km one way with 1,430 feet / 436 metres of gain from a trailhead elevation of 9,240 feet. 6
The freshest trail note is recent enough to plan around: on Aug. 20, the park reported the Glacier Gorge route mostly dry to Mills and Black Lake, with mud and puddles after rain. That is a usable late-summer condition, not a guarantee against afternoon storms. 7
National Park Week runs Aug. 22–30, 2026. The Aug. 25 entrance fee-free day has already passed for this coverage window, so expect a normal entrance pass plus Timed Entry+ if you drive Bear Lake Road during controlled hours. 8
The access gate: Timed Entry+ and Park & Ride
From May 22 through mid-October 2026, Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road is required to reach Glacier Gorge between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. The reservation costs a $2 Recreation.gov processing fee and does not replace the park entrance pass. Reservations are released on a set monthly schedule, with additional inventory at 7 p.m. MDT the night before. 910
A valid entrance fee or park pass is required around the clock. Rocky Mountain lists standard entrance-pass options in the $15–$35 range depending on pass type and duration; buy at an entrance station or online through Recreation.gov. 11
The Glacier Gorge parking area fills early. The park’s Bear Lake Road guidance is to park at Park & Ride and take the free Bear Lake shuttle to Glacier Gorge. A Timed Entry reservation does not guarantee a trailhead parking space. 12
The NWS point forecast near Longs Peak called for afternoon shower and thunderstorm chances through the week, including 50% after noon on Wednesday and 30% Thursday and Friday. Start early and treat building storms as a hard turnaround. 13
Best plan: secure Timed Entry+, park at Park & Ride, and board an early Bear Lake shuttle. Go when the reservation, entrance pass, and morning forecast all line up; make it a no-go if Timed Entry+ is unavailable during your window or thunder is already nearby.
Lake Valhalla via Smithbrook, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest
7.0 miles roundtrip · 1,500 ft gain · moderate/hard · high point 5,050 ft
Lake Valhalla is the Cascades lake day built for late summer. Washington Trails Association lists 7.0 miles roundtrip, 1,500 feet of gain, a 5,050-foot high point, and a Moderate/Hard rating, with wildflowers early and berries later in the season. 14
Two fresh field reports support the trip this week. An Aug. 23 WTA trip report said the trail was in good shape, the road was rough, and wildflowers were still blooming. An Aug. 25 report said the trail was snow-free and in good condition, with no bugs, and warned that Smithbrook Road needed high clearance because of ruts about two feet deep. Treat those as hiker observations, not Forest Service status rows. 1516
The access gate: Smithbrook Road
The Forest Service’s Smithbrook Trailhead page places the lot about 3 miles up Smithbrook Road / Forest Road 6700 off U.S. 2 and says no fees are required at the site. The same page notes the trailhead is popular and that wilderness regulations apply once you enter Henry M. Jackson Wilderness. 17
The Aug. 25 road warning is the real go/no-go. If your vehicle cannot clear deep ruts, do not force the drive; turn around and keep the trip for another week or another trailhead. Okanogan-Wenatchee also shows active fire closures elsewhere on the forest and elevated fire danger across several rating areas, so check the current alerts page before you leave even though Smithbrook itself is listed open. 17
The NWS Stevens Pass-area forecast issued Aug. 26 called for sunny conditions near 75°F that day, then mostly sunny and cooler near 59°F on Friday, with a 50% chance of showers and a high near 52°F on Saturday. The same outlook also listed an air-quality alert for the area, so check smoke before committing. 18
Best plan: drive Smithbrook only if the road matches your vehicle, then hike light and early. Go when the road, air quality, and Friday-style forecast all look workable; make it a no-go if the ruts are too deep, smoke settles in, or Saturday’s shower cool-down is your only available day and you want dry footing.
The pick
Choose Healy Pass if the group wants the strongest Banff alpine meadow day and can use the remaining Canada Strong Pass window. Choose Black Lake if the group can lock Timed Entry+ and commit to an early Glacier Gorge start. Choose Lake Valhalla if the group wants a Cascades lake day and the vehicle can clear Smithbrook Road.
Every option needs one last morning check: Banff trail conditions plus the mountain forecast and fire-ban status for Healy Pass; Timed Entry+, entrance pass, shuttle timing, and thunderstorm chances for Black Lake; and Smithbrook Road, air quality, and the Stevens Pass forecast for Lake Valhalla.
