Germany’s latest notification table and two newly published reviews refine the watchpoints while WHO’s cruise-linked Andes outbreak remains closed and no current global denominator is available.

The newest research signal comes from two narrative reviews published on 31 August and 1 September. One review updates the clinical and countermeasure picture across the past five years. The other maps persistent, uneven transmission in Southeastern Europe and the surveillance layers needed to interpret it. Neither paper adds a new case denominator or a new field measurement. 34

Reservoir and exposure context
The latest dated ecological and exposure signal comes from the Netherlands. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported on 23 July that Twente had seen more Puumala infections than in previous years. RIVM described an average of about 15 infections per year, temporary hospital admissions among many patients, and exposure during cleaning or sweeping of sheds contaminated with mouse droppings. RIVM also mentioned a possible mast-year explanation, in which abundant tree seeds can support rodent populations. 8
The Twente report is a dated local signal. It supplies an exposure pathway and a possible ecological explanation, while a September rodent-abundance estimate, reservoir infection prevalence and environmental-sampling result remain unavailable.
The biological route matters for interpreting field alerts. Infected rodents can contaminate dust and surfaces with urine, faeces or saliva, and rural buildings provide common exposure settings during cleaning. Human-to-human spread has a much narrower documented role, concentrated in Andes-virus disease and close, prolonged contact. 5
