Day twenty-seven — Love & Separation, Round 6

A man steps back into the room after seeing her off at the gate. The incense stick is still warm on the bronze stand. Her book lies face-down at the page she was reading. A single embroidered slipper sits crooked against the bed leg. The lamp wick droops, unlit, as if still waiting for her hand.

The room has not been told she is gone.

And he does not dare tell it — does not dare close the book, does not dare extinguish the last thread of incense smoke. Because the moment he does, the room will know. And then he will know. And the warmth left in the air will be only the warmth of the air.

Guqin opens alone: four sparse plucked notes, each one falling into silence before the next begins. No percussion. No hurry. Erhu enters beneath the first chorus with a low interior line — not weeping, only present. A single breath of dizi floats between the bridge and the final chorus, then disappears. The voice is breathy and close in the verses, fuller in the choruses, as if recounting this from memory rather than living it now.
