Kusturica commits, Texas jumps

Nikola Kusturica turned last week's denial into this week's headline: the 17-year-old Serbian wing committed to UCLA on July 9 after telling Hoops HQ on July 6 that he had not made a decision yet. 1 2 The commitment immediately changed UCLA's preseason case, Texas climbed on the signing of frontcourt prospect Marcus Spears Jr., and Gonzaga slipped in analyst Jon Rothstein's board after Mario Saint-Supery signed with Valencia. 3 4 The Protect College Sports Act kept drawing loud support and loud resistance. 5 6

Kusturica committed to UCLA with a multi-year NIL agreement, and the deal is structured around a two-season college plan before the 2028 NBA Draft. 2 7 He chose UCLA over Kentucky, Michigan, and Gonzaga after a recruitment that narrowed around the FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul. 2

The public NIL number remains unresolved. Serbian outlet Meridian Sport initially reported a two-year, $12 million figure, but Yahoo Sports confirmed only that the agreement was for "a sizable amount," and On3/Bruin Report Online warned that numbers reported elsewhere "might not be accurate." 2 7 UCLA still beat Barcelona's retention effort and a group of high-major programs with a major NIL package, but the exact public number remains unsettled. 2

The basketball case is easier to pin down. Kusturica averaged 24.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.7 blocks across seven FIBA U17 World Cup games, with a 57.3% true-shooting mark. 2 In the gold-medal game, the United States beat Serbia 107-81, and Kusturica finished with 37 points, 9 rebounds, and 22 free-throw attempts in 36 minutes. 2 He also made the All-Star Five and won Best Defensive Player as Serbia took silver. 8

UCLA's roster math moved with him. CBS projected a starting group of Trent Perry, Jaylen Petty, Kusturica, Eric Dailey Jr., and Xavier Booker, and 247Sports moved UCLA's 2026 recruiting class from No. 52 to No. 24 after the commitment. 9 10 That matters because UCLA needed a wing answer after Tounde Yessoufou's departure, and Kusturica gives UCLA coach Mick Cronin a freshman who arrives with EuroLeague exposure rather than only high-school projection. 2

The way-too-early boards stayed offseason-fluid, but the movement was specific enough to matter for bracket readers. The Protect College Sports Act had public support from NCAA and Big 12 leadership, but the opposition list also got louder. NCAA president Charlie Baker said on July 6 that it would be a "mistake" to walk away from a bill addressing major college-sports issues, while Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark backed the bill at Big 12 Media Days and called its current form "progress over perfection." 5 16

For roster-building, the immediate takeaway is narrow: NIL and transfer planning still sits under the current patchwork unless the Senate calendar changes fast.

Michigan removed Mike Boynton Jr.'s interim tag on July 10 and named him men's basketball head coach on a two-year contract after Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks. 18 19 Michigan retained 13 of 14 scholarship players, with L.J. Cason still unresolved. 19

The eligibility and NIL data points are broader than basketball, but they affect the same roster economy. An Ohio court granted a preliminary injunction on July 9 allowing 24 college basketball players denied fifth-season eligibility under new age rules to compete, required a $200,000 bond, and set an Aug. 4 case-management conference. 22 The College Sports Commission's NIL Go platform has cleared $355.24 million across 34,195 deals since launch, while 1,812 deals worth $89.85 million were not cleared. 23 Between May 1 and June 30, the platform received 8,298 submissions and cleared 89% of them. 23
