MLB Week 16: Red Sox surge, A's sink
The Dodgers and Brewers remain unanimous Nos. 1 and 2 across the All-Star break ranking set, but Week 16’s real movement is below them. Boston and Detroit carry the strongest buy-low signals, while the Athletics, Mariners, Phillies, and Padres all have different warning signs in the source rankings, run differential, injuries, or expected-record layer.
The Dodgers and Brewers set the Week 16 baseline. All eight ranking sources in the All-Star break set put Los Angeles first and Milwaukee second, which makes the real argument start at No. 3. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Boston is the loudest upgrade. The Red Sox are 9-1 in their last 10 games and riding a nine-game winning streak, while Detroit has the best buy-low profile on the board because its 44-52 record sits far below a 51-45 Pythagorean line. The downgrades start with Oakland and Seattle: the Athletics are 1-9 in their last 10 with a minus-106 run differential, and Seattle's slide now has a Julio Rodriguez injury layer attached to it. 9 10
This order treats current strength as the baseline and uses run differential, expected record, recent form, roster news, and the July 17-20 schedule as tiebreakers.
All 30 teams ranked
| Rank | Team | Record / RD / form | Week 16 read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Los Angeles Dodgers | 61-36 / +149 / 5-5, L3. 9 | The Dodgers are unanimous No. 1 and still own MLB's best run differential, best OPS at .777, and a top-three ERA at 3.55. 11 12 |
| 2 | Milwaukee Brewers | 59-37 / +126 / 5-5, L3. 9 | Milwaukee is unanimous No. 2 and has the second-best run differential and second-best ERA at 3.48, but Brandon Woodruff's 60-day IL move keeps the rotation on the deadline board. 12 10 |
| 3 | Tampa Bay Rays | 56-38 / +32 / 5-5, L1. 9 | Tampa Bay holds the consensus No. 3 slot, but a 50-44 Pythagorean record makes the Rays a risky buy when the market treats the actual record as fully earned. 9 |
| 4 | Atlanta Braves | 55-40 / +92 / 5-5, W1. 9 | Atlanta's source rank is still top-four quality, and Ronald Acuna Jr.'s possible rehab work after the break is the roster variable that can reopen the ceiling. 10 |
| 5 | Chicago Cubs | 54-42 / +52 / 6-4, W2. 9 | Chicago gets the edge over Philadelphia because the Cubs have the stronger run differential and the cleaner expected-record case. 9 |
| 6 | Philadelphia Phillies | 54-43 / -10 / 5-5, W2. 9 | Philadelphia's actual record is strong, but the 47-50 Pythagorean record is the biggest warning sign near the top of the table. 9 |
| 7 | New York Yankees | 54-42 / +91 / 6-4, W4. 9 | The Yankees are better than their recent panic and worse than their season-long run differential until Aaron Judge's return timeline firms up. 8 10 |
| 8 | Miami Marlins | 52-45 / +24 / 6-4, L3. 9 | Miami's June surge still matters: BetMGM cites a 20-6 June, and the club remains in the top-10 consensus mix. 6 |
| 9 | Chicago White Sox | 50-45 / +35 / 5-5, W3. 9 | The White Sox share first place in the AL Central and carry ESPN's A+ midseason grade, so this is no longer just a fun first-half story. 13 |
| 10 | St. Louis Cardinals | 50-45 / +6 / 4-6, L1. 9 | St. Louis stays in the top 10 because several ranking outlets keep the Cardinals there, but the six-run differential leaves little cushion. 8 |
| 11 | Pittsburgh Pirates | 50-47 / +44 / 7-3, W3. 9 | Pittsburgh has a better run profile than several teams above it, and the offense ranks second in MLB OPS at .768. 11 |
| 12 | Texas Rangers | 49-47 / -15 / 5-5, W1. 9 | Texas gets Wyatt Langford back, but Jacob deGrom's glute issue and Chris Martin's shoulder IL move keep the Rangers below the stronger Wild Card profiles. 10 |
| 13 | Cleveland Guardians | 51-46 / -2 / 6-4, W4. 9 | Cleveland has the record, but the near-even run differential makes this a hold rather than an upgrade. 9 |
| 14 | Seattle Mariners | 48-49 / +16 / 4-6, W1. 9 | Seattle fell across multiple sources after a 1-5 road trip, and Julio Rodriguez's concussion status adds a short-term lineup risk. 1 10 |
| 15 | Boston Red Sox | 46-48 / +27 / 9-1, W9. 9 | Boston is still under .500, but the Red Sox are the clearest riser after a nine-game winning streak and a 50-44 expected record. 9 |
| 16 | Detroit Tigers | 44-52 / +24 / 7-3, L2. 9 | Detroit has the strongest disconnect on the board: a losing record, a positive run differential, and a 51-45 expected record. 9 |
| 17 | San Diego Padres | 48-48 / -43 / 5-5, W2. 9 | San Diego's .500 record masks the worst OPS in MLB at .672 and a 43-53 expected record. 11 9 |
| 18 | Arizona Diamondbacks | 49-47 / -13 / 6-4, W4. 9 | Arizona's four-game winning streak helps, but Zac Gallen's right elbow inflammation is a real rotation downgrade. 10 |
| 19 | Minnesota Twins | 48-49 / -14 / 7-3, W2. 9 | Minnesota has the same recent-form bump as Detroit and Boston without the same positive run-differential case. 9 |
| 20 | Washington Nationals | 48-49 / +7 / 4-6, L3. 9 | Washington can score, with 516 runs tied at the top of the league, but the staff ERA sits in the bottom five. 11 12 |
| 21 | Houston Astros | 47-51 / -47 / 4-6, L1. 9 | Houston's recovery list matters, but the current run differential and sub-.500 record keep the Astros out of the Wild Card trust tier. 9 |
| 22 | Baltimore Orioles | 46-51 / -19 / 7-3, W4. 9 | Baltimore gets credit for a 7-3 finish into the break, but the pitching injury ledger still offsets the short hot streak. 10 |
| 23 | Toronto Blue Jays | 45-51 / -35 / 5-5, L2. 9 | Toronto sits in the soft AL middle, but the run differential and bottom-five OPS profile do not support a bigger move. 11 |
| 24 | Cincinnati Reds | 43-52 / -60 / 4-6, L2. 9 | Nick Lodolo and Matt McLain landing on the IL weakens a roster that already had a poor run profile. 10 |
| 25 | Athletics | 41-55 / -106 / 1-9, L9. 9 | The Athletics are the sharpest faller: 17 losses in 20 games, a nine-game skid, and the worst run differential in baseball. 1 9 |
| 26 | New York Mets | 40-57 / -65 / 4-6, L3. 9 | Mark Vientos' broken hand deepens a seller profile that already had one of the league's worst records. 10 |
| 27 | San Francisco Giants | 41-55 / -64 / 5-5, W2. 9 | San Francisco's record and run differential leave no strong case to climb beyond the lower-third cluster. 9 |
| 28 | Los Angeles Angels | 38-59 / -55 / 2-8, L2. 9 | Mike Trout's return does not change the larger read: a 38-59 record and 2-8 finish put the Angels near the bottom of the league. 10 |
| 29 | Colorado Rockies | 39-59 / -89 / 4-6, L2. 9 | Colorado avoids the bottom only because Kansas City has the worse injury context; the Rockies still have MLB's worst ERA at 5.44. 12 |
| 30 | Kansas City Royals | 38-59 / -88 / 3-7, L5. 9 | Kansas City has bottom-tier form, bottom-tier run prevention, and Cole Ragans facing a 10-12 month recovery after UCL repair surgery. 10 |
Movers that changed the board
Boston's move is the cleanest upgrade because it is not only a streak story. Bleacher Report moved the Red Sox up nine spots, Yardbarker cited a 12-spot monthly climb, and USA TODAY moved them up three spots. 1 4 3 The standings layer backs up the move: Boston is 46-48, but its plus-27 run differential and 50-44 expected record say the club has played better than its actual record. 9
Detroit is the more awkward riser. FanSided moved the Tigers up four spots, Yardbarker moved them up seven, and CBS moved them up eight. 2 4 8 The Tigers are still 44-52, so the ranking cannot ignore the standings. The case is that Detroit's plus-24 run differential, 51-45 expected record, and 3.65 ERA look nothing like a normal 52-loss team. 9 12
The Athletics are the most direct downgrade. Bleacher Report moved them down five spots, CBS moved them down six, and Yardbarker cited an eight-spot monthly drop. 1 8 4 Oakland's current nine-game losing streak, minus-106 run differential, and 5.21 ERA make that fall hard to dispute. 9 12
Seattle is a subtler faller because the run differential is still positive. The problem is the current direction. The Mariners came out of a 1-5 road trip, multiple sources moved them down, and Julio Rodriguez's concussion recovery now sits between Seattle and a clean post-break reset. 1 8 10
The Yankees and Padres both require context. New York has MLB's best ERA at 3.37 and a plus-91 run differential, but the Judge absence remains the reason sources disagree from top-five trust to lower-top-10 caution. 12 9 10 San Diego has stabilized with two straight wins, but a minus-43 run differential and league-worst .672 OPS make the Padres look like a worse team than their .500 record. 9 11
The analytics layer
| Team | Actual vs. expected | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phillies | 54-43 actual, 47-50 expected. 9 | Philadelphia is a top-six team here because results count, but a minus-10 run differential makes the Phillies the top regression warning among contenders. |
| Tigers | 44-52 actual, 51-45 expected. 9 | Detroit is the cleanest buy-low profile if the front office does not strip the roster at the deadline. |
| Rays | 56-38 actual, 50-44 expected. 9 | Tampa Bay deserves top-three status, but the gap says bettors should avoid paying full-record prices. |
| Padres | 48-48 actual, 43-53 expected. 9 | San Diego's record is doing too much work for a team with the league's weakest OPS. 11 |
| Yankees | 54-42 actual, 58-38 expected. 9 | New York's season-long quality remains strong even while the short-term injury picture stays uncomfortable. |
| Red Sox | 46-48 actual, 50-44 expected. 9 | Boston's rise is not only momentum; the underlying record says the Red Sox were better than their standing before the winning streak. |
The metric board still starts with Los Angeles and Milwaukee. Los Angeles leads MLB in run differential and OPS, while Milwaukee is second in run differential, second in ERA, first in strikeouts per nine innings at 9.73, and tied to a bullpen with 30 saves. 9 11 12 That is why the Dodgers and Brewers can both carry short losing streaks into the break without losing their ranking position.
Pittsburgh is the team the table may still underrate. The Pirates rank first in batting average at .263, second in OPS at .768, and tied for first in runs with 516. 11 The restraint is run prevention: a 4.32 ERA keeps Pittsburgh out of the top 10 even with a plus-44 differential. 12
Injury and roster context
| Team | Personnel update | Ranking effect |
|---|---|---|
| Yankees | Aaron Judge remains on the IL with a right rib fracture, Carlos Rodon is recovering from left elbow inflammation, and Max Fried is likely to make a rehab start on July 17. 10 | The Yankees keep a top-seven slot because the run-prevention and run-differential base is elite, but the lineup cannot be priced as normal until Judge's return path is clearer. |
| Brewers | Brandon Woodruff moved to the 60-day IL with a new right shoulder anterior capsule injury, Kyle Harrison went on the 15-day IL, and Jacob Misiorowski skipped his All-Star Game appearance because of arm fatigue. 10 | Milwaukee remains No. 2, but its deadline need is rotation insurance rather than a luxury add. |
| Dodgers | Shohei Ohtani is dealing with left knee inflammation, while Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow are still building back from injuries. 10 | The depth chart is still good enough for No. 1, but the pitching staff health list explains why the gap over Milwaukee is not larger. |
| Braves | Ronald Acuna Jr. is likely to begin rehab work during the break after a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. 10 | Atlanta has the most obvious internal upgrade among the top-four teams. |
| Mariners | Julio Rodriguez is expected back after the break from a concussion, but Seattle enters the restart from a weak road trip. 10 | Seattle's Week 17 rank depends on whether the offense rebounds immediately. |
| Mets | Mark Vientos is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a right hand fracture. 10 | That injury reinforces a seller read for a 40-57 club. |
| Athletics | Nick Kurtz and Zack Gelof are new injury notes on a roster already sliding hard. 10 | Oakland's fall is performance-driven first, but the roster context removes much of the rebound case. |
| Diamondbacks | Zac Gallen landed on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation. 10 | Arizona's four-game winning streak gets discounted because the rotation just lost its best stabilizer. |
Restart schedule watch
The All-Star break pauses the standings churn, then the first post-break window immediately tests the top tier. The July 17-20 schedule includes Dodgers-Yankees, Dodgers-Phillies, Marlins-Brewers, Rangers-Braves, Pirates-Guardians, White Sox-Blue Jays, and Twins-Cubs. 14
| Series | Why it can move Week 17 |
|---|---|
| Dodgers at Yankees, July 17-19. 14 | Los Angeles can validate the unanimous No. 1 slot, while New York gets a direct chance to quiet the Judge-absence discount. |
| Dodgers at Phillies, July 20. 14 | Philadelphia's top-six rank meets the best run-differential team in baseball, which is exactly the kind of matchup that can expose the Pythagorean gap. |
| Marlins at Brewers, July 17-20. 14 | Milwaukee's injured rotation depth faces a top-10 Miami team that already forced its way out of seller assumptions. |
| Rangers at Braves, July 17-20. 14 | Texas needs to prove the lineup can support its playoff chase, while Atlanta may get closer to an Acuna return. |
| Pirates at Guardians, July 18-20. 14 | Pittsburgh's offense and Cleveland's record-over-run-differential profile make this a useful Wild Card comparison. |
| White Sox at Blue Jays, July 17-20. 14 | Chicago can defend its top-10 case against a Toronto team with little margin before the deadline conversation gets louder. |
| Twins at Cubs, July 17-20. 14 | Minnesota brings a 7-3 finish into a series that can either validate Chicago's top-five placement or pull the Cubs back toward the Phillies/Cardinals pack. |
For next week's order, the pressure is on Boston, Detroit, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee. Boston and Detroit have underlying buy signals. Seattle has to prove the lineup is not still leaking value. Philadelphia has to protect a high rank that the run differential does not love. Milwaukee has to show its pitching depth can absorb another injury wave.
