September 1: When the World Opened in Different Ways

September 1 carries three very different openings: a war that widened across Europe, a flash on the Sun that reached telegraph wires on Earth, and a ship found in the Atlantic after seventy-three years in the dark.

The First Shots at Westerplatte

Before dawn on September 1, 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein moved into position near Danzig. Its visit had looked ceremonial. Hidden below deck were more than two hundred marines. At 4:43 in the morning, the ship opened fire on the Polish military depot at Westerplatte. 1
The attack was not a single strike at one port. German forces crossed the border from several directions, supported by more than 1,300 aircraft. The fast combination of tanks and air power became known as blitzkrieg, or “lightning war.” Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later, but their declarations did not save Poland. 1
The story also had a second front, and then a second invader. On September 17, the Soviet Union entered Poland from the east under the secret terms of the Nazi-Soviet pact. Warsaw held out for a time, but Poland was divided between the two powers. The invasion lasted until October 5, and it became the opening act of a war that would bring occupation, mass murder, and resistance on a continental scale. 12

A Flash Above the Telegraph

Now move from a gun deck to a small observatory outside London. On the morning of September 1, 1859, the astronomer Richard Carrington was sketching sunspots through a telescope. He saw two patches of intense white light appear on the Sun. Five minutes later, the flare disappeared. 3
The Earth received the message about seventeen hours later. Auroras appeared far south of the places where people expected them. In North America, the sky became bright enough for people to read newspapers and for workers to mistake the glow for morning. Telegraph equipment sparked, operators were shocked, and some paper caught fire. 34
In 1859, the telegraph was the nervous system of long-distance communication. The storm showed that the wires were connected to something much larger than the machines at their ends. A disturbance on the Sun could arrive as a beautiful sky and a dangerous current at the same time.

The Ship in the Dark

The third opening happened far below the surface. On September 1, 1985, an American-French team found the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic. The liner had sunk in 1912, but the expedition was not simply a search for a famous ship. 5
Oceanographer Robert Ballard had built a deep-sea imaging system called Argo. The U.S. Navy agreed to support his project on one condition: the system would first survey two nuclear submarines, the Thresher and the Scorpion, which had sunk during the Cold War. The Titanic search served as the public explanation for work the Navy wanted to keep quiet. 5
After the submarine surveys, Ballard had only twelve days left for the Titanic. Eight days passed without a find. Then, in the early morning, the team spotted a massive boiler. Instead of looking for the whole ship, Ballard had been looking for the trail of objects scattered when the hull broke apart. Argo followed the debris and found the wreck. 5
September 1 leaves us with three openings. At Westerplatte, a first shot became a continental war. In Carrington’s observatory, a brief flash revealed that the Sun could reach into human machines. On the Atlantic floor, a secret military survey helped bring a lost passenger liner back into public view.
The scenes are different, but the pattern is the same: what begins at one small point can travel much farther than anyone standing there can see.
