Ismael Saibari left the World Cup with three goals, a shootout-winning penalty and a new employer. He arrived at Bayern Munich from PSV with a reported £43m price tag, then came off the bench to provide two assists in Bayern's 5-1 Bundesliga win over Stuttgart. The tournament made Saibari visible. Those moments turned a midfielder who had spent six seasons building his name at PSV into one of the tournament's most visible new attackers. 1

The move also fits Saibari's recent club rise. FIFA says he made 142 appearances for PSV and was named Eredivisie Player of the Year after helping the club win the league. His last two seasons brought 15 goals and 14 assists, then 19 goals and nine assists. 4

Saibari was born in Terrassa, Spain, to Moroccan parents. His family moved to Belgium in 2007 after his father lost his job and a small grocery shop failed. Saibari came through Anderlecht and Genk before joining PSV in 2020. His brother Akram recalled a family that had to “start again from scratch.” The brothers carried a football everywhere, even to the bathroom. 4

Belgium's Roberto Martínez invited Saibari to represent Belgium in 2022. Saibari chose Morocco. That decision now sits inside a much larger story: Morocco reached the latter stages of another historic tournament, while Saibari became one of its leading scorers. 4
