Your five stories from Jordan today: a regional ceasefire holds as Jordan's borders stay busy; Crown Prince Hussein visits the national football squad in San Diego; the Jordan Strategy Forum backs the JD30 salary hike; the government launches a digital security program for political parties; and police warn of a phone scam targeting citizens.

Iran-Israel pause holds — and Jordan's borders see 231 incidents in H1 2026

The regional security picture shifted overnight after Israel and Iran announced a mutual suspension of strikes, easing the most acute phase of a conflict that had briefly disrupted Jordanian airspace last week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israel had stopped hitting Iran, while Tehran said it too had ended military operations — though both sides warned of resumption if the other escalates. Iran's Civil Aviation Organization said its airspace had returned to normal conditions, and Israel lifted workplace and school restrictions from 6 a.m. Tuesday. 1
Separately, the Jordan Armed Forces on Tuesday briefed the scale of border security operations in the first half of 2026. Director of Land Operations Gen. Yaseen Qudah told Al Mamlaka TV that Border Guard Forces dealt with 231 smuggling and infiltration attempts during the period, seizing 11 million Captagon pills, 14 kilograms of other narcotic substances, 1,670 hashish slabs, and 125 GPS devices. Forces also downed 56 drones. 2
Qudah said smuggling networks have adopted "sophisticated and varied methods," including simultaneous operations to traffic drugs and weapons across Jordan's 1,744-kilometre border. He stressed that advanced surveillance technologies — thermal cameras, radars, and drones — underpin the round-the-clock monitoring effort.

Crown Prince visits World Cup squad in San Diego

HRH Crown Prince Hussein flew to the Jordanian national football team's training base camp in San Diego on Monday, just days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins. It is Jordan's first-ever appearance at the tournament. 3
Speaking with the players, the Crown Prince praised their "tactical discipline" and told them all Jordanians were behind them. In a televised interview with beIN Sports, he said the team's confidence "has filled Jordanians with pride" and called on the squad to leverage the experience of the current generation to strengthen Jordan's football culture long-term. He also expressed pride in the level of Arab representation at the 2026 World Cup overall.
The players said they were immensely proud to represent Jordan on the world stage for the first time, and pledged to give their best performance.

Jordan Strategy Forum backs JD30 pay rise as consumer spending booster

The Jordan Strategy Forum published a policy brief on Tuesday analyzing the economic effects of the government's plan to raise salaries of civil and military employees and retirees earning less than JD600 per month by JD30, effective in 2027. 4
The forum concluded that the raise will directly support consumer demand because this income group has a high marginal propensity to spend — meaning the additional JD30 is more likely to be channeled immediately into goods and services rather than saved. The report described the measure as "a critical booster for the purchasing power of low-income groups" and a lever that would generate a positive ripple effect through national economic activity.

The JD30 increase was among the cabinet decisions announced Monday, alongside a raise in the local industrial preference in public tenders from 15% to 20% and the approval of a $400 million World Bank health sector loan — all covered in Tuesday's brief.

Government launches digital safety program for political parties

The Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs on Tuesday launched the "Digital Safety for Political Parties" project in cooperation with the King Hussein Foundation's Information and Research Center and the SecDev Foundation. 5
The initiative aims to strengthen parties' ability to protect their data, manage their digital presence securely, and counter phishing, hacking attempts, and disinformation. Ministry Secretary-General Ali Khawaldeh said the project fits the national vision for political modernization, which treats strong and effective parties as a core pillar of democratic life. He added that digital platforms have become central tools for engaging young people in party work, making digital security a prerequisite for credible political participation.
Regional Director for the Middle East at the International Development Research Center, Wessam El Beih, said data protection and stronger institutional structures for parties are essential to improving the effectiveness of political work.

PSD warns of scam calls impersonating security officers

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) issued a warning Tuesday about a new phone scam in which callers pose as security officers to defraud citizens. The PSD urged the public not to share personal or financial information over unsolicited calls and to verify any such contact through official channels before taking any action. 6
In a separate development on the social front, Princess Basma bint Ali opened a renovated Knowledge Station at the Umm Al Hussein Orphanage in Amman, providing children there with updated digital learning resources. 7
